📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Escape on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlamps, hazard lights, and ignition off.
- Open the liftgate to access the rear tail lamp fasteners.
- A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching paint or plastic.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to open the liftgate fully.
- Make sure the liftgate is stable and will not fall while you work.
- Put on safety glasses and clean nitrile gloves.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Screw Covers
- Use a flat trim removal tool to gently pry open the small screw covers on the inner edge of the tail lamp.
- Work slowly so the plastic covers do not crack.
- Gentle pressure prevents broken clips.
Step 3: Remove the Tail Lamp Screws
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the tail lamp retaining screws.
- Place the screws on a clean microfiber towel so they do not roll away.
- No torque is required during removal.
Step 4: Pull the Tail Lamp Assembly Rearward
- Use both hands to hold the tail lamp assembly.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward away from the body of your Escape.
- Do not twist the lamp; hidden alignment pins can break if the lamp is pulled sideways.
- If it feels stuck, use a flat trim removal tool carefully at the outer edge to help release it.
- Pull straight back, not outward.
Step 5: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Look at the back side of the tail lamp assembly.
- The rear turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber turn signal section of the lamp.
- A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp housing.
Step 6: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp assembly.
- Do not pull on the wiring harness.
Step 7: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the old rear turn signal bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight outward.
- Do not crush the glass bulb.
Step 8: Install the New Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to handle the new rear turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean microfiber towel before installing.
Step 9: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp assembly.
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Make sure the socket sits flat and secure.
Step 10: Test the Turn Signal Before Reassembly
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode.
- Use the turn signal stalk to activate the repaired side.
- Confirm the new rear turn signal bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the ignition and signal switch off after testing.
Step 11: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly
- Use both hands to align the tail lamp pins with the body openings.
- Push the tail lamp straight forward until it seats evenly against the body.
- Make sure no wiring is pinched behind the lamp.
Step 12: Reinstall the Screws and Covers
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the tail lamp screws.
- Tighten the screws snug only; do not overtighten plastic lamp parts.
- Torque to snug by hand only
- Use your fingers to press the screw covers closed.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Test both left and right rear turn signals.
- ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and verify both rear bulbs flash.
- ✅ Check that the tail lamp sits flush against the body.
- ✅ Make sure the liftgate opens and closes without touching the lamp.
- ✅ If the signal still blinks fast, check the other turn signal bulbs on that side.
