🔧 Outback - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

The rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail-light assemblies. Each assembly must be unfastened and pulled straight rearward before the bulb socket can be removed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch off all exterior lights and remove the ignition key before starting.
  • 🧤 Allow the bulbs to cool before touching their sockets.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 💡 Do not touch the replacement bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • 🚫 Do not pry the lamp sideways because its locating pins can break.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim-removal tool (specialty)
  • Phillips torque screwdriver rated 1–10 Nm
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Low-tack masking tape
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear amber turn signal bulb, 7440NA/WY21W - Qty: 2 - Replace in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Outback on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Switch the ignition and exterior lights off, then open the liftgate.
  • 🧼 Clean dirt from around both rear lamp assemblies with a clean microfiber cloth.
  • 🛡️ Apply low-tack masking tape along the nearby painted edges to help prevent scratches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lamp fasteners

  • Put on clean nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws exposed along the liftgate-side edge of one rear combination lamp.
  • Keep both screws together in a safe place.

Step 2: Release the rear lamp assembly

  • Place the plastic trim-removal tool between the lamp’s forward edge and the body only far enough to assist your grip.
  • Pull the lamp assembly straight rearward. This releases its locating pins from the body clips.
  • Do not twist the lamp or pull it sideways.
  • Support the assembly without stretching its wiring.
  • Gentle rocking helps release stubborn locating pins.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal socket

  • Identify the turn signal socket behind the clear turn-signal section of the lamp.
  • Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Use your clean nitrile-gloved fingers to pull the old wedge-base bulb straight out of its socket. A wedge-base bulb pushes directly into the socket and does not twist.
  • Align the new 7440NA/WY21W amber bulb with the socket and press it straight in until fully seated.
  • If the bulb glass is touched, clean it carefully with the clean microfiber cloth before installation.

Step 5: Test the new bulb

  • Keep the lamp supported and place the socket safely away from moving parts.
  • Switch on the ignition and operate the turn signal for that side.
  • Confirm the new bulb flashes brightly and at the normal speed, then switch the ignition and lights off.
  • If it does not illuminate, use your gloved hand to remove and firmly reseat the bulb before testing again.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket

  • Use your gloved hand to insert the socket into its matching opening.
  • Rotate the socket clockwise about one-quarter turn until it locks securely.
  • Check that the socket seal is flat and not pinched, which helps keep moisture out.

Step 7: Reinstall the lamp assembly

  • Align the lamp’s locating pins with their body clips.
  • Use both gloved hands to press the assembly straight forward until it sits evenly against the body.
  • Start both screws by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the Phillips torque screwdriver to tighten the lamp screws evenly to 4.5 Nm (3.3 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten because the plastic mounting tabs can crack.

Step 8: Replace the opposite-side bulb

  • Use the same Phillips #2 screwdriver, plastic trim-removal tool, and clean nitrile gloves to repeat Steps 1–7 on the opposite lamp.
  • Replacing both bulbs together helps maintain equal brightness and reduces the chance of another failure soon afterward.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test the left and right turn signals individually.
  • 🚨 Switch on the hazard warning lights and confirm both rear bulbs flash evenly.
  • 🔍 Confirm both lamp assemblies sit flush and do not move when gently pressed.
  • 💧 Check for condensation after the next wash or rainfall; moisture can indicate a pinched socket seal.
  • 🧹 Remove the masking tape and wipe away fingerprints with the clean microfiber cloth.
