🔧 F-150 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your F-150 uses a dual-filament bulb in each rear lamp for the turn signal, brake light, and tail light. Replacing it requires removing the complete tail-lamp housing, but no wiring repair or programming is needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch off all exterior lights and remove the ignition key before starting.
  • 🧤 Allow the bulb to cool before touching it.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 💡 Do not force the lamp sideways; its locating pins can break.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • 1/4-inch drive extension (3-inch)
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (20-100 in-lbs range)
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 4057K dual-filament rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1
  • 4057K dual-filament rear turn signal bulbs - Qty: 2 if replacing in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground, shift into Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition and exterior-light controls off, then remove the key.
  • 🚪 Lower the tailgate fully to expose the two tail-lamp retaining bolts.
  • 🧤 Put on clean gloves and safety glasses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Tail-Lamp Bolts

  • Use an 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two bolts along the inside edge of the affected tail lamp.
  • Place both bolts somewhere safe so they cannot fall into the bed or bumper area.

Step 2: Release the Tail-Lamp Housing

  • Hold the housing with both gloved hands and pull it straight rearward, parallel with the side of the truck.
  • The plastic locating pins are press-fit guides that align the lamp with the body.
  • Do not twist the housing outward or pry against the painted body.
  • Use gentle, even pressure with both hands.

Step 3: Remove the Turn-Signal Socket

  • Support the housing with one hand so its wiring is not stretched.
  • Locate the upper large bulb socket; this is the rear stop, turn-signal, and tail-light socket.
  • Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket counterclockwise approximately one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the housing.

Step 4: Replace the Bulb

  • Use your gloved fingers to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. This is a wedge-base bulb, meaning it pulls out rather than unscrews.
  • Inspect the socket for melted plastic, green corrosion, or burned terminals. Replace the socket separately if any damage is present.
  • Align the base of the new 4057K bulb with the socket and press it straight in until fully seated.
  • Do not use a tool to grip or install the glass bulb.

Step 5: Test the New Bulb

  • Keep the tail-lamp housing supported and away from moving parts.
  • Switch on the hazard warning lights and verify that the new bulb flashes brightly.
  • Turn on the parking lights and confirm that the same bulb illuminates at lower intensity.
  • Switch everything off before continuing.
  • If it does not work, use your gloved hand to remove the bulb, rotate it 180 degrees, reinstall it, and test again.

Step 6: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to align the socket tabs with the openings in the lamp housing.
  • Insert the socket and rotate it clockwise approximately one-quarter turn until locked.
  • Confirm that the socket seal sits evenly against the housing to prevent water entry.

Step 7: Reinstall the Tail-Lamp Housing

  • Align the housing's locating pins with the body openings.
  • Press the housing straight forward by hand until it sits flush with the body.
  • Start both retaining bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and in-lb torque wrench to tighten both bolts to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the bolts; excessive force can crack the plastic mounting tabs.

Step 8: Close the Tailgate

  • Raise and latch the tailgate by hand.
  • Check that the tailgate does not contact the lamp housing.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test the turn signal, hazard lights, brake light, and parking light functions.
  • 👀 Compare the repaired side with the opposite lamp. Both should have similar brightness.
  • 💧 Check that the bulb socket and tail-lamp housing remain secure and properly sealed.
  • 🔧 No scan-tool reset, coding, or infotainment procedure is required.
