- 📍 Park your Suburban on level, solid pavement. Shift into Park and switch off the ignition.
- 🛞 Release the parking brake completely, then place rubber wheel chocks firmly in front of and behind both front wheels.
- 🧊 Let the brakes cool fully before touching the calipers or rotors.
- 🧰 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall. Clean around its cap before opening it.
- 🧴 If the fluid is at the MAX line, use the brake fluid syringe to remove a small amount into the drain pan. Compressing the pistons will raise the fluid level.
- 📱 No infotainment menu, scan-tool command, EPB service mode, battery registration, or coding is needed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while your Suburban is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and support the rear
- Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the center of the rear axle housing. Do not place the jack beneath the differential cover.
- Raise your Suburban until both rear tires clear the ground.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the solid rear axle tubes, close to the suspension spring mounts.
- Lower the axle gently onto the stands. Leave the floor jack lightly touching the axle as a backup without carrying the vehicle’s weight.
- Push the body gently to verify that the vehicle is stable before beginning.
Step 3: Remove both rear wheels
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the rear wheel nuts.
- Remove both wheels and lay them flat away from the work area.
- Position one removed wheel flat beneath the side of the vehicle as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Inspect the brakes
- Use the safety glasses and brake parts cleaner over the drain pan to remove loose brake dust. Allow the cleaner to evaporate.
- Inspect both rotor faces for deep grooves, blue heat spots, heavy rust, or cracks.
- Check the inner and outer pads. Strongly uneven wear can indicate seized slide pins or a sticking caliper.
- Inspect the rubber brake hoses and caliper piston boots for splits or wet brake-fluid leakage.
- Do not continue with pads alone if a caliper leaks, the rotor is cracked, or one pad is worn far more than its partner.
Step 5: Remove the first rear caliper
- Work on one side at a time so the assembled opposite side remains available as a reference.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin rotates, hold its flats with the 18mm open-end wrench while turning the bolt with the 13mm socket.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the caliper hanger hook to suspend it from the suspension.
- Do not disconnect the brake hose and do not let the caliper hang by the hose.
Step 6: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad abutment clips. These clips support the ends of the pads.
- Note the location and direction of any wear indicator before discarding the pads.
- Use the brake hardware cleaning brush and brake parts cleaner to clean the clip mounting surfaces on the bracket.
- Do not grind or remove metal from the bracket.
Step 7: Check and lubricate the guide pins
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand. A guide pin allows the caliper to slide and apply both pads evenly.
- Wipe each pin clean and inspect it for corrosion, grooves, or binding.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to each guide pin by hand, then reinstall it into the correct boot.
- Use only silicone brake lubricant around rubber parts. Petroleum grease can damage the boots.
- Confirm that both pins move smoothly and that each rubber boot seals around its pin.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Place the old inner pad against the caliper piston.
- Install the rear brake caliper piston compression tool between the old pad and the outer side of the caliper.
- Turn the tool slowly until the piston is fully seated in the caliper bore. This piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
- Stop if the piston will not move smoothly or if fluid leaks past the piston boot.
- Compress slowly to prevent fluid overflow.
Step 9: Install the new hardware and pads
- Press the new rear brake pad abutment clips into the caliper bracket by hand. Confirm that every clip is fully seated.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the clips.
- Do not put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand, matching the original wear-indicator position.
- Move each pad by hand to confirm that it slides in the clips without binding.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper
- Remove the caliper from the hanger hook and lower it over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- If necessary, hold the guide-pin flats with the 18mm open-end wrench.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both caliper guide-pin bolts to 38 Nm (28 ft-lbs).
- Confirm that neither guide-pin boot is twisted or pinched.
Step 11: Repeat on the opposite side
- Use the same 13mm socket, 18mm open-end wrench, cleaning brush, piston compression tool, and torque wrench to replace the pads and hardware on the other rear wheel.
- Compare both completed sides and verify that the pads, clips, bolts, and brake hoses are positioned alike.
Step 12: Reinstall the rear wheels
- Clean obvious dirt from the wheel mounting faces using the brake hardware cleaning brush. Keep lubricant off the studs and wheel nuts.
- Install each wheel and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the rear axle slightly, remove both jack stands, and lower your Suburban until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Restore brake-pedal pressure
- Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times by foot until it feels firm.
- Do not move your Suburban until the pedal becomes firm.
- Check the reservoir level. If needed, add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed bottle until the level is between MIN and MAX.
- Install the reservoir cap securely by hand.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine while holding the brake pedal. The pedal may drop slightly but should remain firm.
- 🔍 Inspect both rear calipers and the brake-fluid reservoir for leakage.
- 🚦 In a safe, empty area, test the brakes at walking speed before entering normal traffic.
- 🛑 Bed in the new pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Avoid coming to a complete stop during the sequence when safe.
- 🌡️ Drive for several minutes afterward without heavy braking to let the brakes cool.
- 🚫 Avoid hard braking and trailer towing for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
- 🔧 Recheck wheel-nut torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
- ⚠️ If the pedal stays soft, the vehicle pulls, or a wheel becomes unusually hot, stop driving and inspect the repair.
