🔧 Tundra - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Your Tundra uses rear disc brakes with a separate drum-style parking brake inside each rotor. This procedure replaces the rear pads without opening the hydraulic system or disturbing the parking brake.

Assumption: The rear rotors and calipers are serviceable and do not require replacement.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on level, solid pavement and support your Tundra with properly rated jack stands.
  • Do not rely on a floor jack alone while working underneath or beside the vehicle.
  • Leave the parking brake released because it operates inside the rear rotors.
  • Chock both front wheels before lifting the rear axle.
  • Never press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • Do not allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Do not use compressed air to clean the brakes.
  • Battery disconnection is not required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tundra on level pavement. Shift into Park, switch off the engine, and release the parking brake.
  • Place heavy-duty wheel chocks securely against the front and rear of both front tires.
  • Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. Use the plastic fluid syringe to remove a small amount only if the fluid is near the MAX line.
  • A torque wrench tightens a fastener to a measured specification. Set it only when performing final tightening.
  • A piston compression tool slowly pushes the caliper piston back so the thicker new pads will fit.
  • No infotainment menu, scan tool, electronic parking-brake mode, or battery disconnect is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • With the rear tires still touching the ground, use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear Axle

  • Position the 3-ton floor jack beneath the center of the rear axle differential housing. Do not place the jack against the thin differential cover.
  • Raise the rear until both tires clear the ground.
  • Place the 6-ton jack stands beneath the rear axle tubes near the leaf-spring mounting areas.
  • Lower the axle carefully onto the stands, then gently shake the body to verify that it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Work on one brake at a time so the assembled side remains a reference.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use the safety glasses and nylon parts-cleaning brush with non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean loose dust from the caliper and pad area. Position the drain pan underneath.
  • Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, blue heat spots, or a pronounced outer ridge.
  • Inspect the caliper and hose for wet brake-fluid leakage. Stop the repair if leakage is present.
  • Compare inner and outer pad wear. A large difference can indicate seized slide pins or a sticking caliper.

Step 5: Remove the Rear Caliper

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper straight away from the pads. Do not pull or twist the brake hose.
  • Support the caliper from the suspension with the brake caliper hanger.
  • Do not remove the larger caliper-bracket bolts because rotor removal is unnecessary for a pad-only service.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Note the location of the wear indicator, shims, and stainless pad-support clips.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the old support clips from the bracket.
  • Do not pry against the rubber guide-pin boots.

Step 7: Check the Guide Pins

  • Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand, checking that it moves smoothly and is free of corrosion.
  • Use the nylon parts-cleaning brush and brake cleaner to clean dirty guide pins. Keep brake cleaner away from rubber components.
  • Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the smooth guide-pin surfaces, then reinstall them by hand.
  • Confirm that each rubber boot seats fully in its groove.
  • Replace the caliper or damaged guide components if a pin is deeply rusted, bent, or seized.

Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old pad against the piston face to spread the force evenly.
  • Use the disc brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and straight into the caliper bore.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the plastic fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston will not move smoothly. Excessive force can damage the caliper.
  • Compress slowly to prevent reservoir overflow.

Step 9: Install the New Hardware and Pads

  • Use the nylon parts-cleaning brush and brake cleaner to clean the caliper-bracket surfaces beneath the pad-support clips.
  • Install the new stainless support clips by hand in the same positions as the originals.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the support clips.
  • Install any supplied shims on the backs of the pads according to their marked positions.
  • Install the inner and outer pads by hand. Position the wear indicator exactly as it was on the original pad.
  • Keep lubricant off the rotor and pad friction surfaces.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Make sure the guide-pin boots are not twisted or pinched.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 10-80 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the opposite rear brake.

Step 11: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift the axle slightly, remove the 6-ton jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 50-150 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before moving your Tundra, press and release the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm. The first several strokes may travel farther than normal.
  • Check the brake-fluid level. It should be between MIN and MAX; do not overfill it.
  • Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady and no brake warning light should remain illuminated.
  • Check around both rear calipers for leaks and verify that the brake hoses are not twisted.
  • Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • Bed the pads with 5-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Allow cooling time between stops and avoid holding the hot brakes at a complete stop.
  • Avoid hard braking and heavy towing for approximately 300 km unless an emergency requires it.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
