📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Malibu on solid, level ground. Put the transmission in Park and leave the electronic parking brake released.
  • 📋 Place wheel chocks securely in front of and behind both front tires.
  • 📋 Allow the brakes to cool completely before touching them.
  • 📋 Connect the battery maintainer according to its instructions. A battery maintainer keeps voltage steady while the scan tool operates the parking-brake motors.
  • 📋 Connect the bidirectional scan tool to the diagnostic connector beneath the driver-side dashboard.
  • 📋 Use the scan tool path appropriate to the tool: Chevrolet > Malibu > 2018 > Chassis > Electronic Parking Brake > Brake Pad Replacement Mode. Command the rear parking-brake actuators to retract.
  • 📋 Confirm that the scan tool reports service mode active before raising the vehicle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Position the 2-ton floor jack beneath the specified rear-center lifting point.
  • Raise the rear and place 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands, then push the body lightly to confirm it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby as secondary support.

Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.

Step 4: Remove the Rear Caliper

  • Work on one side at a time so the assembled side remains a reference.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Support it from the suspension with the 12-inch bungee cord.
  • Do not allow the caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose or parking-brake wiring.

Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless-steel pad clips.
  • Note the position of the wear indicator so the new pads can be installed in the same orientation.

Step 6: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Check that electronic parking-brake service mode remains active on the scan tool.
  • Place an old brake pad against the piston, then use the rear brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Do not force or rotate the piston. If it will not move with moderate pressure, stop and verify that the parking-brake actuator is fully retracted.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Remove excess fluid only if it approaches the reservoir rim.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and place it on a clean work surface.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Use a Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
  • If the rotor is rusted to the hub, strike only the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 16-ounce ball-peen hammer.
  • Remove the rotor and place it in the drain pan.
  • Never strike the wheel studs or hub bearing.

Step 9: Clean the Hub and Bracket

  • Wear safety glasses, gloves, and a particulate mask.
  • Use the 6-inch wire brush to remove rust from the hub face and the caliper-bracket pad-contact areas.
  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner over the drain pan to wash away loose residue.
  • Make sure the hub face is smooth; trapped rust can make the new rotor wobble.

Step 10: Install the New Rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and wipe it with a clean disposable towel.
  • Place the rotor squarely over the wheel studs.
  • Install the retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket and torque wrench. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 11: Service and Install the Caliper Bracket

  • Confirm both guide pins slide freely in their rubber boots. A guide pin allows the caliper to move evenly as the brakes apply.
  • Use the 6-inch wire brush to clean the pad-contact lands, then install the new hardware clips by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant beneath the hardware and to the pad ears only.
  • Keep lubricant away from the rotor and pad friction surfaces.
  • Position the bracket and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts. Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Install the New Pads and Caliper

  • Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket with the friction material facing the rotor.
  • Lower the supported caliper over the pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts. Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the other rear wheel using the same listed tools and torque specifications.
  • Before installing the wheels, inspect both brake hoses, parking-brake connectors, guide-pin boots, and calipers for damage or leaks.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Place each wheel onto the hub and install all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise the rear slightly with the 2-ton floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle fully.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern. Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Restore the Electronic Parking Brake

  • With the ignition on and the engine off, use the bidirectional scan tool to select Electronic Parking Brake > Exit Brake Pad Replacement Mode.
  • Follow the scan-tool prompts to extend and calibrate both parking-brake actuators.
  • Operate the parking-brake switch once to apply it and once to release it.
  • Use the scan tool to check the electronic parking-brake and ABS modules for diagnostic trouble codes.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before moving your Malibu, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm. The first several presses may travel farther than normal.
  • ✅ Check the brake-fluid level and confirm it is between the MIN and MAX marks.
  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm the red brake warning and amber ABS warning lamps turn off normally.
  • ✅ Apply and release the electronic parking brake twice. Listen for smooth, equal operation from both rear calipers.
  • ✅ Check around both calipers for fluid leaks and verify the parking-brake wiring is secure.
  • ✅ Perform a slow brake test in a traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds of cooling between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with hot brakes.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking and prolonged brake-pedal holding for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-100 km.
