🔧 Tahoe - Rear Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the rear brake pads and both rear brake rotors. Your Tahoe uses a disc brake caliper for normal braking and separate parking-brake shoes inside each rear rotor.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4 hours

Assumption: These instructions apply to the stock U.S.-market rear brake system.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on firm, level ground and support your Tahoe with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Release the parking brake before removing the rotors. Chock the front wheels securely so the vehicle cannot roll.
  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Brake dust and brake cleaner can irritate your eyes and skin.
  • Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • Brake cleaner is flammable. Keep it away from sparks, flames, and hot surfaces.
  • Battery disconnection is not required because your Tahoe uses a mechanical parking-brake pedal, not an electronic parking brake.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tahoe on level pavement. Shift into Park, switch off the engine, and remove the key.
  • Release the parking brake completely. The rear rotors cannot be removed with the parking brake applied.
  • Place wheel chocks tightly against the front and rear sides of both front tires.
  • Open the hood and check the brake-fluid reservoir. Use a brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount if the fluid is at the MAX line, because compressing the pistons will raise the level.
  • Take a picture of each brake assembly before disassembly. This provides a useful reference for clip placement.
  • No infotainment service mode or scan-tool parking-brake command is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • With your Tahoe still on the ground, use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Position the 3-ton floor jack under the center of the rear axle housing. Do not place the jack beneath the differential cover.
  • Raise the rear until both tires clear the ground.
  • Place 3-ton jack stands beneath the axle tubes, near the factory suspension mounting areas.
  • Lower the axle carefully onto the stands, then gently push the body to verify that it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and slide them under the frame as an additional safety measure.

Step 4: Remove the Rear Caliper

  • Start on one side so the assembled opposite side remains available as a reference.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns, hold its flats with an 18mm open-end wrench while loosening the 13mm bolt.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use a medium pry bar carefully if the pads are gripping the rotor.
  • Support the caliper with a caliper hanger hook. Do not stretch or twist the brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Caliper Bracket

  • Pull the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips from the bracket.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and place it on a clean work surface.

Step 6: Remove the Rear Rotor

  • Use a Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If the rotor will not move, confirm that the parking brake is fully released. Tap around the rotor hat with a rubber mallet.
  • If the rotor moves slightly but catches on the parking-brake shoes, remove the backing-plate access plug and use a brake adjusting spoon with a small flat-blade screwdriver to retract the star-wheel adjuster. Turn it in the direction that shortens the shoe assembly.
  • Do not force the rotor over the shoes. Forcing it can damage the parking-brake hardware.

Step 7: Inspect the Parking Brake

  • Use safety glasses and inspect the parking-brake shoes inside the rotor area.
  • Check for loose friction material, broken springs, fluid contamination, or metal-to-metal wear.
  • If a shoe lining is separated or damaged, use brake spring pliers to replace the parking-brake shoes and hardware on both sides before continuing.
  • Do not spray lubricant on the parking-brake shoe linings.

Step 8: Clean the Hub and New Rotor

  • Place a drain pan below the work area.
  • Use a hub cleaning brush and wire hand brush to remove rust from the wheel-hub face. The new rotor must sit completely flat.
  • Spray both friction surfaces of the new rotor with brake parts cleaner and wipe them dry with shop towels.
  • Keep oil, grease, and fingerprints away from the cleaned braking surfaces.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake pedal pulsation.

Step 9: Install and Check the New Rotor

  • Slide the new rotor over the parking-brake shoes and fully against the hub.
  • Install a new retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench. Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Rotate the rotor by hand. It should turn smoothly with only a faint, even parking-brake shoe drag.
  • If the rotor will not fit or will not turn, use the brake adjusting spoon and small flat-blade screwdriver to retract the star-wheel adjuster slightly.

Step 10: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire hand brush to clean rust and debris from the bracket areas beneath the pad clips.
  • Install the new stainless pad clips by hand.
  • Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand. Wipe it clean with a shop towel and inspect it for rust, pitting, or binding.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it into its boot.
  • Verify that each pin slides freely and that the rubber boot is fully seated.
  • Apply only a very thin film of ceramic brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the stainless clips. Keep lubricant off the pad friction material and rotor.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and start both new bracket bolts by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bolts. Torque to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place the old inner pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the rear brake caliper piston compressor to push the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
  • This piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston binds, the rubber boot twists, or fluid leaks from the caliper.

Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand, matching their positions to the old pads.
  • Make sure the pad tabs sit completely inside the stainless clips and slide without excessive force.
  • Keep the friction surfaces clean and dry.

Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the caliper hanger hook and place the caliper over the new pads.
  • Make sure the brake hose is not twisted.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench. Hold the guide-pin flats with an 18mm open-end wrench if needed. Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same tools and procedure to replace the pads and rotor on the other rear wheel.
  • Compare clip, pad, hose, and guide-pin positions with the completed side before installing the wheel.

Step 16: Adjust the Parking Brake

  • Use the brake adjusting spoon through each backing-plate access opening to expand the parking-brake shoes gradually.
  • Turn the rotor by hand while adjusting. Expand the shoes until the rotor develops noticeable drag, then retract the adjuster slightly until the rotor turns freely with only light, even contact.
  • Reinstall each rubber access plug by hand.
  • Apply and release the parking-brake pedal several times, then verify that both rotors release fully.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern while the wheels are raised.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift the axle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower your Tahoe until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern. Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 18: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your Tahoe until the pedal is firm and maintains its height.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the proper range.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady and should not sink toward the floor.
  • Check both rear calipers, hose connections, and bleeder screws for leaks.
  • Test the parking brake on level ground before relying on it on an incline.
  • Perform a slow test drive in a traffic-free area. Verify normal stopping, no pulling, and no grinding noises.
  • Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds of driving between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with hot brakes.
  • Drive for 10 minutes afterward without heavy braking to let the brakes cool.
  • Avoid hard braking and towing for the first 300-500 km unless required for safety.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
