🔧 Sonata - Rear Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the rear brake pads and both rear rotors on your Sonata. The parking brake uses small drum-style shoes inside each rear rotor, so the parking brake must be fully released before removing the rotors.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Sonata with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Release the parking brake completely before lifting the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Hang each caliper securely. Never let it hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it away with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid damages paint. Remove excess fluid from the reservoir if it approaches the top while compressing the pistons.
  • ⚠️ Do not place grease on pad friction material or rotor surfaces.
  • Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Sonata on firm, level ground. Place the transmission in Park and switch off the engine.
  • Release the parking brake completely. This allows the drum-style parking-brake shoes to release from inside the rotors.
  • Place wheel chocks firmly in front of both front tires.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir. Clean around its cap before opening it.
  • Use a turkey baster or fluid syringe to remove a small amount of brake fluid if the reservoir is near the MAX line.
  • No infotainment service mode, scan tool, electronic parking-brake retraction, or battery disconnect is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while your Sonata is still on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the approved rear lifting point, then position 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points.
  • Lower your Sonata gently onto the jack stands and confirm it is stable.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts and both rear wheels.
  • Slide each wheel under the rocker as backup.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns, hold its flats with a 17mm wrench while loosening the 14mm bolt.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use a brake caliper hanger to suspend it from the suspension.
  • Remove the old inner and outer pads by hand or gently pry them free with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Do not twist, stretch, or kink the brake hose.

Step 4: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston, then use the brake caliper piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
  • This is a push-in piston because the parking brake operates separate shoes inside the rotor. Do not force the piston to rotate.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or will not move with moderate force.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Lift the bracket away from the rotor.
  • Keep the bolts clean and inspect their threads for damage.

Step 6: Remove the Rear Rotor

  • Use a Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screw.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If the rotor is stuck to the hub, strike only the rotor hat with a 16-ounce rubber mallet while rotating it.
  • If the rotor moves outward but catches on the parking-brake shoes, remove the rubber access plug and use a flat-blade screwdriver with the brake adjustment spoon to retract the star-wheel adjuster a few clicks.
  • A star-wheel adjuster is a small toothed wheel that changes parking-brake shoe clearance.
  • Do not force the rotor over the parking-brake shoes.

Step 7: Clean and Inspect the Hub

  • Position the 2-quart drain pan below the brake assembly.
  • Use brake cleaner and a small brass wire brush to clean brake dust from the bracket and accessible parking-brake components.
  • Use the hub cleaning brush to remove rust from the hub face and center pilot.
  • Inspect the parking-brake shoe linings, springs, and adjuster. Replace damaged, loose, oil-soaked, or separated components before continuing.
  • The hub face must be smooth so the new rotor sits completely flat.

Step 8: Prepare and Install the New Rotor

  • Use brake cleaner and a clean section of shop-safe wiping material to remove protective oil from both rotor friction surfaces and the inner parking-brake drum.
  • Place the rotor over the wheel studs and against the clean hub.
  • Align and install the retaining screw using the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver.
  • Use the torque wrench with the appropriate Phillips No. 3 attachment to torque the rotor retaining screw to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Turn the rotor by hand. It should rotate with only slight parking-brake shoe contact.

Step 9: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Remove the old pad hardware from the bracket by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Use brake cleaner and the small brass wire brush to clean the hardware mounting surfaces.
  • Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand. Wipe it clean and inspect it for rust or scoring.
  • Apply a thin coat of silicone ceramic brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it in its original position.
  • Install the new brake pad hardware by hand.
  • Apply only a very thin film of silicone ceramic brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the hardware.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Place the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench to torque the caliper-bracket bolts to 69 Nm (51 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Insert the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad tabs sit fully inside the new hardware and slide without binding.
  • Keep all lubricant away from the pad friction surfaces and rotor.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Do not force the caliper. Confirm the piston is fully compressed and the guide-pin boots are not twisted.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to torque the guide-pin bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
  • If a pin turns, hold its flats with the 17mm wrench while using the torque wrench.

Step 13: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 3-12 on the other rear brake assembly.
  • Always replace rear pads and rotors on both sides.

Step 14: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Sonata slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your Sonata until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir and add only fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid as needed. Do not exceed the MAX line.
  • Tighten the reservoir cap by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal must not continue sinking.
  • ✅ Apply and release the parking brake several times to settle the parking-brake shoes.
  • ✅ Confirm the brake-fluid level is between MIN and MAX and inspect both calipers for leaks.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds of cooling between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking and holding the brake pedal while stopped with very hot brakes for the first 300 km.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs) after 80-100 km.
