📋 Before You Begin
- Park on firm, level pavement. Place the transmission in Park and switch off the engine.
- Use the wheel chocks to secure both sides of one front tire.
- Release the foot-operated parking brake completely. It must remain released during rotor removal.
- Use the flashlight to check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at MAX, remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- Open the new parts and compare them with the original parts before installation. Rotor and pad dimensions must match.
- No infotainment menu, battery disconnection, electronic parking-brake mode, or scan tool is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear
- Use the floor jack at the designated rear floor-jacking point shown in your Sienna owner’s manual.
- Raise the rear and position the jack stands under the designated left and right rear support points.
- Lower your Sienna gently onto the stands. Leave the floor jack touching the lift point as backup support.
- Push gently on the body to confirm it is stable before removing the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts and both rear wheels.
- Complete one side before disassembling the other side. The assembled side provides a useful reference.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the pads. If necessary, use the medium flat-blade screwdriver for gentle leverage only.
- Use a brake caliper hanger to suspend the caliper from the suspension without pulling or twisting its hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Note the location of each wear indicator before removing the pads.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad-support clips from the bracket.
Step 6: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Use the flashlight to inspect the piston and its rubber dust boot. Stop if the boot is torn or brake fluid is present.
- Use the 6-inch brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
- The rear piston presses directly inward; it does not need to be rotated.
- Use the flashlight to monitor the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop before it overflows.
- Slow pressure prevents piston and seal damage.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket and place it over the drain pan.
- Use brake cleaner and the wire brake-parts brush to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the support clips.
Step 8: Remove the Rear Rotor
- Confirm again that the parking brake is completely released.
- Pull the rotor straight from the hub by hand.
- If rust holds it in place, thread both 8mm x 1.25 rotor removal bolts into the rotor’s threaded holes.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the removal bolts alternately, one turn at a time.
- If the rotor moves outward but catches, stop. The internal parking-brake shoes are holding it.
- Align the rotor access hole with the parking-brake adjuster. Use the flashlight and small flat-blade screwdriver to retract the star wheel in small increments.
- Use the 16-ounce rubber mallet to tap the rotor hat between the wheel studs if necessary. Do not hit the studs or braking surfaces.
Step 9: Inspect the Parking-Brake Shoes
- Use the flashlight to inspect the parking-brake shoes, springs, pins, and adjuster located inside the rotor.
- Stop and replace the affected parts if a shoe lining is cracked, loose, contaminated, or approximately 1mm thick or less.
- Use brake cleaner over the drain pan to wash away loose dust. Do not use compressed air.
Step 10: Clean the Hub and New Rotor
- Use the wire brake-parts brush to remove rust from the hub face. Do not damage the wheel-stud threads.
- Use brake cleaner and lint-free shop towels to remove protective oil from both sides of the new rotor.
- Wear nitrile gloves to avoid transferring oil onto the clean braking surfaces.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Slide the rotor over the wheel studs by hand and seat it completely against the hub.
- If it will not pass over the parking-brake shoes, use the small flat-blade screwdriver to retract the star-wheel adjuster slightly.
- Temporarily install two wheel nuts by hand to hold the rotor flush against the hub.
- Do not force the rotor over the parking-brake shoes.
Step 12: Clean and Lubricate the Slide Pins
- Pull the slide pins and rubber boots from the caliper bracket by hand. Keep the upper and lower parts in their original locations.
- Use brake cleaner and lint-free shop towels to remove the old grease.
- Apply a thin layer of silicone brake caliper grease to the smooth portion of each slide pin.
- Reinstall each pin by hand and make sure its rubber boot seats completely in the bracket groove.
- Move each pin by hand to verify it slides smoothly.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both mounting bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts to 104 Nm (77 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new stainless-steel support clips fully into the cleaned bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin layer of silicone brake caliper grease where the pad ears touch the support clips.
- Keep all grease away from the pad friction material and rotor surfaces.
- Install the inner and outer pads by hand.
- Install the new wear indicators in the same positions and orientations as the original indicators.
- Move the pads by hand and confirm they slide smoothly in the bracket.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper from its hanger and position it over the new pads by hand.
- Do not force it. If it does not fit, use the 6-inch brake piston compression tool to compress the piston farther.
- Start both slide-pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Use the flashlight to confirm the brake hose is not twisted and both slide-pin boots are seated.
Step 16: Complete the Opposite Side
- Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the opposite rear wheel.
- Compare the pad, clip, and wear-indicator arrangement with the completed side before installing the second caliper.
Step 17: Reinstall and Torque the Wheels
- Use the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two temporary wheel nuts from each rotor.
- Install both wheels and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the floor jack to raise your Sienna, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires onto the ground.
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Before moving your Sienna, press and release the brake pedal repeatedly until it feels firm.
- Use the flashlight to check the brake-fluid reservoir. Add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the proper range.
- Apply and release the parking brake several times. Confirm it holds the vehicle securely before relying on it.
- Start the engine and confirm the brake warning light turns off.
- Test the brakes at walking speed in a clear area. Confirm the pedal remains firm and your Sienna stops straight.
- Bed in the pads with approximately eight moderate stops from 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow space between stops and avoid holding the hot brakes at a complete stop.
- Drive for approximately 10 minutes with minimal braking afterward to let the brakes cool.
- Avoid unnecessary hard braking for the first 300 km.
- After 80-160 km, use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to recheck the wheel nuts at 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
