🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while the Elantra is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Elantra
- Use the hydraulic floor jack at the approved rear lifting point.
- Position the jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
- Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before working underneath or beside it.
Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Remove the Rear Caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. If it is tight, use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the old pad and rotor to create a small amount of clearance.
- Support the caliper with a caliper hanger hook. Do not twist or pull its hose.
- Complete one side before dismantling the other.
Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips.
- Inspect the old pads. Tapered or uneven wear can indicate sticking guide pins or a seized caliper.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to remove the two bracket bolts behind the rotor.
- Lift the caliper bracket away and keep grease away from all pad and rotor friction surfaces.
Step 7: Remove the Rear Rotor
- Confirm that the parking brake remains fully released.
- Use the No. 3 Phillips impact screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screw.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub. If rust holds it in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the dead-blow hammer.
- If the rotor moves outward but catches on the parking-brake shoes, stop pulling. Use the flat-blade screwdriver through the access opening to retract the parking-brake shoe adjuster slightly.
- Do not strike the wheel studs or the thin rotor braking surfaces.
Step 8: Inspect the Parking-Brake Components
- Use the safety glasses, mechanic’s dust mask, and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to wet and remove loose dust.
- Inspect the parking-brake shoes inside the rotor area for cracked, loose, contaminated, or missing friction material.
- Check the springs and adjuster for damage. Repair these components before fitting the new rotor if defects are found.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and Install the Rotor
- Use the hub-cleaning wire brush to remove rust from the hub face and center pilot. The new rotor must sit completely flat.
- Clean both friction surfaces of the new rotor with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and wipe them dry with a clean lint-free towel.
- Slide the rotor over the parking-brake shoes and onto the hub.
- Install a new retaining screw with the No. 3 Phillips impact screwdriver. Use the torque wrench to torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Use the dial indicator with magnetic base to check rotor lateral runout about 10mm from the outside edge. Maximum runout is 0.05mm (0.002 inch).
- If runout exceeds the limit, remove the rotor, clean the hub again, rotate the rotor on the studs, and retest.
Step 10: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the brake-hardware cleaning brush and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
- Install the new pad-support clips by hand.
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot, wipe it clean, and inspect for rust or scoring.
- Apply a thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it. Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage rubber boots.
- Verify that both pins slide smoothly and that each boot seals around its pin.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to torque the bracket bolts to 69 Nm (51 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and use the brake-fluid syringe if the fluid is near the top.
- Place an old pad against the piston, then use the rear brake caliper compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper. This tool applies controlled pressure without damaging the piston.
- The piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
- Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or requires excessive force. A seized caliper must be replaced.
Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the support clips.
- Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- Keep lubricant completely off the pad friction material and rotor surfaces.
- Verify that the pads move freely in the clips without excessive looseness.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper hanger hook and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
- Align the guide pins and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to torque the guide-pin bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
- Repeat Steps 4-14 on the opposite rear wheel.
Step 15: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Mount each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise the vehicle, remove the jack stands, and lower the Elantra until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Add only fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid if the level is below the MIN mark.
- Never drive the Elantra if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.

- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady.
- ✅ Inspect both rear calipers and hoses for leaks.
- ✅ Apply and release the parking brake several times, then confirm both rear wheels rotate without heavy dragging when released.
- ✅ Perform a slow test in a traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ✅ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 30 mph to 5 mph, allowing brief cooling between stops.
