🔧 Malibu - Ignition Coil Replacement
Your Malibu has one ignition coil above each spark plug. This procedure replaces all four coils; however, coils do not have to be replaced as a set if testing identified only one failed coil.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before touching components near the turbocharger.
- 🔑 Switch the ignition off and keep the key or transmitter away from the vehicle.
- 🔌 Never disconnect an ignition coil while the engine is running because the ignition system produces high voltage.
- 🛡️ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
- 🧹 Prevent dirt or loose hardware from entering the spark-plug wells.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch drive ratchet
- 1/4-inch drive extension, 3-inch
- Torque wrench, 2-20 Nm range
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Compressed-air duster
- Nitrile mechanic gloves
- Safety glasses
- Fender cover
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coils for 1.5L turbo engine - Qty: 4
If only one coil has been confirmed faulty, purchase one coil. These coils do not require replacement in pairs.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Malibu on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and let the engine cool.
- 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- 🔑 Shut off the ignition and move the key or transmitter at least 15 feet from the vehicle.
- 🛡️ Place the fender cover over the front bodywork.
- 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan-tool command, battery registration, or programming is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover
- Grip the engine appearance cover near its mounting points and pull it straight upward by hand.
- If a rubber mounting point sticks, gently lift beside it with the plastic trim removal tool.
- Set the cover aside where its rubber mounting grommets cannot be lost.
- Pull near each mount to avoid cracking the cover.
Step 2: Clean Around the Ignition Coils
- Put on the safety glasses before using the compressed-air duster.
- Blow loose dirt away from the four coil openings. Keep the air nozzle outside the openings.
- The spark-plug well is the narrow opening beneath each ignition coil.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connectors
- Starting with the coil nearest one end of the engine, locate its electrical connector.
- Release any visible connector lock with the plastic trim removal tool, then press the release tab and pull the connector straight back by hand.
- Hold the plastic connector housing. Do not pull on the wires.
- Repeat for the remaining three coils.
Step 4: Remove the Coil Retaining Bolts
- Use the 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove one retaining bolt from each coil.
- Place the four bolts in a clean container so they cannot fall into the engine compartment.
Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coils
- Grip each coil firmly by hand and twist it slightly to loosen its rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward from the spark-plug well.
- Inspect the removed coil for oil, coolant, corrosion, or burn marks.
- If liquid is present inside a well, do not install the new coil until the source of the leak is repaired.
- Replace one coil at a time to stay organized.
Step 6: Install the New Ignition Coils
- Compare each new coil with the removed coil. The connector, mounting ear, and rubber boot must match.
- Lower each coil straight over its spark plug by hand.
- Press firmly on top until the rubber boot seats over the spark-plug terminal.
- Do not apply grease unless the coil manufacturer specifically supplies or requires it.
Step 7: Install and Tighten the Retaining Bolts
- Start every retaining bolt several turns by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and torque wrench to tighten each bolt.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the bolts; the cylinder-head threads and coil mounting ears can be damaged.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connectors
- Push each connector onto its matching coil by hand until the release tab clicks.
- Re-engage any connector lock with the plastic trim removal tool.
- Gently tug each connector housing to verify it is secured.
Step 9: Reinstall the Engine Appearance Cover
- Inspect the cover’s rubber grommets and reposition them by hand if any moved during removal.
- Align the cover over its mounting studs and press directly above each mounting point by hand.
- Remove the fender cover and confirm no tools remain in the engine compartment.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle for two to three minutes.
- 👂 Confirm the engine idles smoothly without shaking, snapping sounds, or a flashing check-engine light.
- 🔍 Switch the engine off and inspect all four connectors to make sure they remain fully latched.
- ⚠️ If the check-engine light flashes or the engine misfires badly, shut it off immediately and recheck coil seating and connector installation.
- 🧠 New ignition coils do not require programming or an adaptation procedure.
- 📋 A stored misfire code may remain after the repair and can require clearing with a compatible scan tool.
