🔧 Civic - Ignition Coil Replacement

Your Civic uses four coil-on-plug ignition coils, one sitting directly on top of each spark plug. Replacing them is a beginner-friendly repair that can fix misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light related to ignition coil failure.

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the cylinder head.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on ignition coil wiring. Always press the connector tab and pull the connector body.
  • ⚠️ Replace coils one at a time if you are new to this, so nothing gets mixed up.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Civic on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • An OBD-II scan tool is a small plug-in scanner that reads and clears diagnostic trouble codes from the vehicle computer.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps keep moisture out of electrical boots and connectors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Stand at the front of your Civic and locate the black plastic engine cover on top of the engine.
  • Use your hands to gently lift the engine cover upward from its rubber mounting grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help lift at the corners.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get scratched or stepped on.
  • Lift evenly to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils

  • Look across the top center of the engine for four identical ignition coils.
  • Each coil has an electrical connector and one small mounting bolt.
  • If replacing only one coil, match the bad cylinder from your scan tool code. For example, P0302 usually means cylinder 2 misfire.
  • Cylinder 1 is at the passenger side of the engine, then cylinders 2, 3, and 4 move toward the driver side.

Step 3: Disconnect the Ignition Coil Connector

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Press the release tab on the coil electrical connector with your finger.
  • If the tab is tight, gently press it with needle-nose pliers.
  • Pull the connector straight back by the plastic connector body.
  • Do not pull on the wires.
  • Old connectors can be brittle.

Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil mounting bolt.
  • Set the bolt in a safe place.
  • If replacing multiple coils, remove only one coil at a time to keep the job simple.

Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coil

  • Hold the ignition coil firmly by the top body.
  • Twist the coil slightly left and right to loosen the rubber boot from the spark plug.
  • Pull the coil straight up and out of the spark plug tube.
  • Inspect the old coil boot for oil, cracks, burn marks, or white tracking lines.
  • If there is engine oil inside the spark plug tube, the valve cover gasket may also need repair.

Step 6: Prepare the New Ignition Coil

  • Compare the new ignition coil to the old one. The connector shape, length, and bolt location should match.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the rubber boot.
  • Do not fill the boot with grease. Too much can cause the boot to slide or trap air.
  • A pea-sized amount is enough.

Step 7: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Slide the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug tube by hand.
  • Press down gently until you feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
  • Make sure the coil mounting hole lines up with the bolt hole.

Step 8: Tighten the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Start the 10mm bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch, and torque wrench, inch-pound range to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The valve cover is aluminum and threads can strip.

Step 9: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body by hand to confirm it is locked.
  • Repeat Steps 3-9 for any other ignition coils being replaced.

Step 10: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Line up the engine cover with its rubber mounting grommets.
  • Press down evenly by hand until it seats fully.
  • Make sure no wiring is trapped under the cover.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 12: Clear Codes and Test Run

  • Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the scan tool to clear stored misfire codes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Listen for smooth idle and check that the check engine light stays off.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test drive your Civic for 10-15 minutes with gentle acceleration first.
  • ✅ Re-scan with the OBD-II scan tool after the drive to confirm no misfire codes returned.
  • ✅ If the same cylinder misfire returns, inspect the spark plug, fuel injector, compression, and coil connector wiring.
  • ✅ If idle relearn is needed after battery disconnect, let the engine idle with all accessories off until fully warm, then drive normally.
