- 📍 Park your CR-V on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
- 🌡️ Open the hood and allow the engine to become completely cool.
- 🔑 Switch off all electrical accessories and move the key away from the vehicle.
- 🔋 Wait at least three minutes, then disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- 🧹 Clean loose dust from around the top of the engine before opening any spark-plug well.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut.
- Lift the terminal from the negative battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Do not disconnect the positive terminal.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover
- Grip the plastic engine cover near its mounting points and pull it straight upward to release its rubber grommets.
- If needed, use a plastic trim tool gently at a mounting point. Do not pry against wiring or the valve cover.
- Place the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
Step 3: Clean Around the Coils
- Locate the four ignition coils in a straight row on top of the engine.
- Use a compressed-air blower with nozzle to remove dust from around each coil and spark-plug well.
- Wear safety glasses and direct debris away from your face.
Step 4: Disconnect the Coil Connectors
- Press the locking tab on the first electrical connector and pull the connector straight back by its plastic housing.
- Use a plastic trim tool only if a connector is stubborn. Do not pull on the wires.
- Repeat for the remaining three connectors.
- A connector lock is the small flexible tab that keeps the plug from vibrating loose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Coils
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the retaining bolt from each coil.
- Keep the bolts in a clean location.
- Twist each coil gently to loosen its rubber boot, then pull the coil straight upward.
- Inspect each spark-plug well for oil or water. If liquid is present, do not install the new coil until the leak or water entry is corrected.
- Work one cylinder at a time to prevent mix-ups.
Step 6: Compare and Install the New Coils
- Compare each new coil with the removed coil. The connector, mounting ear, boot length, and overall shape must match.
- Do not apply grease unless the coil manufacturer specifically supplies and instructs you to use it.
- Push each new coil straight over its spark plug until the rubber boot is fully seated.
- Align the coil mounting ear with its threaded hole.
Step 7: Tighten the Coil Bolts
- Start every retaining bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading the aluminum cylinder head.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten each bolt.
- Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten these small bolts.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connectors
- Push each connector squarely into its ignition coil until the locking tab clicks.
- Gently tug each connector housing to verify it is locked. Do not pull on the wires.
- Check that no wiring is trapped beneath a coil or stretched tightly.
Step 9: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Align the plastic engine cover with its rubber mounting grommets.
- Press down directly over each mounting point by hand until the cover is fully seated.
- Do not strike the cover or force it sideways.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative terminal fully onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Confirm the terminal cannot rotate by hand. Avoid overtightening it.

- ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes. It should idle smoothly without shaking.
- ✅ Confirm the check-engine light does not flash. A flashing light indicates an active misfire; shut the engine off immediately.
- ✅ Listen for snapping or clicking around the coils, which can indicate an electrical arc or an incompletely seated boot.
- ✅ Take a short, gentle test drive and verify smooth acceleration.
