Your Avalon has six individual ignition coils, one above each spark plug. The three front coils are easy to reach, but replacing the three rear coils requires removing the upper intake manifold, also called the intake air surge tank.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood and install the fender cover.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp off the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before disconnecting engine electrical connectors.
Step 2: Remove the engine appearance cover
- Lift the front corners of the plastic engine cover upward by hand to release its rubber retainers.
- Lift the cover away and place it safely aside.
- If equipped with threaded cover fasteners, remove them with the 10mm socket before lifting.
Step 3: Remove the air-intake duct
- Unplug the mass-airflow sensor connector by pressing its lock and pulling on the connector body.
- Release any wiring clips with the plastic trim removal tool.
- Use the 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake-hose clamps.
- Disconnect the breather hose using the hose-clamp pliers.
- Remove the air-cleaner lid and intake duct as an assembly. Cover the open duct with a clean lint-free shop towel.
Step 4: Replace the three front ignition coils
- Use the compressed-air blow gun and safety glasses to clear dirt from around each front coil. A low-pressure air stream is sufficient.
- Press the locking tab and unplug each coil connector. Use the plastic trim removal tool only if a tab is difficult to reach.
- Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove each coil retaining bolt.
- Twist each coil gently by hand, then pull it straight upward.
- Inspect each spark-plug well with a light. Oil or coolant in a well must be repaired before installing a new coil.
- Push each new coil straight onto its spark plug until fully seated.
- Install the retaining bolts with the 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench. Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect each electrical connector until its lock clicks.
- Replace one coil at a time to prevent mix-ups.
Step 5: Disconnect the throttle-body connections
- Unplug the electronic throttle connector by releasing its locking tab.
- Use the hose-clamp pliers to move the coolant-hose clamps rearward, then twist and disconnect the hoses.
- Catch the small amount of escaping coolant with clean lint-free shop towels.
- Disconnect the remaining vacuum and ventilation hoses using the hose-clamp pliers. Mark their positions if needed.
- Use the 10mm socket to remove brackets attached to the throttle body or upper intake manifold.
Step 6: Remove the throttle body
- Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the four throttle-body fasteners.
- Lift the throttle body away without forcing the electronic throttle plate.
- Remove and discard the old throttle-body gasket.
- Cover the opening with a clean lint-free shop towel.
- Do not spray cleaner into the throttle actuator or force the throttle plate open.
Step 7: Disconnect the upper intake manifold
- Unplug the manifold-related electrical connectors and release their harness clips using the plastic trim removal tool.
- Disconnect the vacuum hoses using the hose-clamp pliers.
- Use the 10mm and 12mm sockets with the appropriate extension to remove the intake-manifold support brackets.
- Use the 5mm hex-bit socket and 10mm socket, as applicable to the installed fasteners, to loosen the upper intake manifold evenly from the outside toward the center.
- Keep every fastener organized by its original location.
Step 8: Lift off the upper intake manifold
- Check around the entire manifold for any connected hose, wiring clip, or bracket.
- Lift the manifold straight upward by hand. Do not pry against the aluminum cylinder head.
- Remove the old upper intake manifold gaskets.
- Immediately plug every exposed intake port with separate clean lint-free shop towels.
- Use the shop vacuum around the outside of the ports. Do not push debris toward an open port.
- Count every port towel before reassembly.
Step 9: Replace the three rear ignition coils
- Use the compressed-air blow gun and safety glasses to clear debris from around the rear coils before removing them.
- Press the locking tabs and unplug the three coil connectors.
- Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolts.
- Twist each coil gently and pull it straight out by hand.
- Check the spark-plug wells for oil, coolant, corrosion, or damaged connector terminals.
- Install the three new coils and press them down until fully seated.
- Install the retaining bolts using the 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench. Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect all three coil connectors until they click.
Step 10: Reinstall the upper intake manifold
- Use the shop vacuum and lint-free shop towels to clean the gasket-contact areas without scratching them.
- Remove and count all intake-port towels. Confirm that all six ports are completely clear.
- Fit the new upper intake manifold gaskets into their locating grooves. Install them dry unless the gasket manufacturer specifies otherwise.
- Lower the manifold squarely into position without shifting the gaskets.
- Start every fastener by hand. Use the 5mm hex-bit socket or 10mm socket to snug them gradually from the center outward.
- Use the foot-pound torque wrench for the final pass. Torque the upper intake manifold fasteners to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Use the 10mm and 12mm sockets to reinstall the support brackets. Tighten them securely only after the manifold is seated.
- Reconnect every vacuum hose, wiring connector, and harness clip in its original position.
Step 11: Reinstall the throttle body
- Position the new throttle-body gasket and install the throttle body.
- Start all four fasteners by hand, then tighten them evenly with the 10mm socket.
- Use the foot-pound torque wrench for the final pass. Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the coolant and ventilation hoses. Use the hose-clamp pliers to return each clamp to its original position.
- Reconnect the throttle electrical connector until its lock clicks.
Step 12: Reinstall the intake duct
- Remove the protective towel from the intake duct and confirm nothing remains inside.
- Reinstall the air-cleaner lid and intake duct.
- Use the 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the hose clamps until the duct cannot rotate. Do not crush the plastic fittings.
- Reconnect the breather hose and position its clamp using the hose-clamp pliers.
- Reconnect the mass-airflow sensor and reinstall its wiring clips.
Step 13: Reconnect the battery
- Place the negative clamp fully onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the terminal. Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the engine cover by aligning its retainers and pressing it down by hand.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the engine bay carefully for leftover tools, towels, loose connectors, and disconnected hoses.
- ✅ Check the coolant reservoir when the engine is cold. Add Toyota-compatible pink coolant only if the level is below the full mark.
- ✅ Switch the ignition on for several seconds, then start the engine without pressing the accelerator.
- ✅ The engine may idle unevenly briefly while the electronic throttle and idle settings relearn after battery disconnection.
- ✅ Listen for a loud hiss or unusually high idle, which can indicate an intake hose, gasket, or vacuum connection was missed.
- ✅ Confirm the check-engine light does not remain on or flash. A flashing light indicates an active misfire; shut the engine off immediately.
