🔧 Elantra - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Your Elantra uses two different-size front wiper blades attached to J-hook-style arms. A J-hook is the curved end of the metal wiper arm that locks into the blade’s center adapter.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not let a bare metal wiper arm snap against the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- 🛡️ Place a folded microfiber towel on the windshield while each blade is removed.
- ✋ Replace one blade at a time so the other blade can serve as a reference.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1)
- Microfiber towel (clean and folded)

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Elantra on level ground, switch off the ignition, and engage the parking brake.
- 🧼 Clean loose dirt from the lower windshield with the microfiber towel.
- 📏 Match the 26-inch blade to the driver side and the 16-inch blade to the passenger side.
- 🔒 No infotainment setting, scan tool, or wiper service mode is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm
- Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
- Use your hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it remains raised.
- Place the clean, folded microfiber towel on the glass directly beneath the arm.
- Do not bend or twist the metal arm. Keep one hand controlling the arm.
Step 2: Release the Driver-Side Blade
- Rotate the old blade until it is nearly perpendicular to the metal arm.
- Use your thumb to press the small locking tab on the blade’s center adapter.
- While holding the tab, slide the blade downward toward the base of the arm.
- Guide the curved J-hook through the adapter opening and remove the blade.
- Gently rest the bare arm on the folded microfiber towel. Do not place it directly on the glass.
Step 3: Install the 26-Inch Driver Blade
- Use your hand to raise and control the metal arm.
- Pass the arm’s J-hook through the opening in the new 26-inch blade adapter.
- Pull the blade upward into the curved hook until the locking tab clicks.
- Tug the blade gently by hand to confirm it is locked in place.
- No fastener is used, so there is no torque specification.
Step 4: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper
- Use both hands to rotate the blade so its rubber edge faces the windshield.
- Slowly lower the arm until the blade rests on the glass.
- Remove the microfiber towel from beneath the arm.
- Never release a raised wiper arm.
Step 5: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade
- Use your hand to lift and control the passenger-side wiper arm.
- Place the folded microfiber towel beneath the arm.
- Rotate the old blade, press its locking tab, and slide it downward out of the J-hook.
- Fit the new 16-inch blade into the hook and pull it upward until it clicks.
- Tug the blade gently by hand to verify that the adapter is locked.
- Slowly lower the arm onto the windshield and remove the microfiber towel.
- No fastener is used, so there is no torque specification.
Step 6: Check Blade Position
- Use your hands to confirm both rubber wiping edges sit flat against the windshield.
- Verify the 26-inch blade is on the driver side and the 16-inch blade is on the passenger side.
- Check that neither blade adapter is loose or partially outside its J-hook.
✅ After Repair
- 💧 Wet the windshield with washer fluid before testing; never test new blades on dry glass.
- 🔄 Operate the wipers at low speed and confirm both blades move smoothly without striking each other or the windshield trim.
- 👀 Check for streaking, skipping, unusual noise, or a loose adapter.
- 🛑 Stop the wipers immediately if either blade shifts on its arm, then switch off the ignition and relock the adapter.
