🔧 Malibu - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replace both front wiper blades when they streak, chatter, split, or leave areas of the windshield wet. Your Malibu uses different blade lengths on the driver and passenger sides, so install each blade in the correct position.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch the ignition and windshield wipers off before lifting either wiper arm.
  • ⚠️ Do not allow a bare metal wiper arm to snap against the glass; it can crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Replace one blade at a time so the other blade shows the correct installed position.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Thick microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front windshield wiper blade set - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

Note: Use blades supplied with the correct adapter for the Malibu’s factory wiper arms.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Malibu on level ground and turn the ignition completely off.
  • 📍 Confirm the wiper switch is in the off position.
  • 📍 Place a thick microfiber towel on the windshield beneath the blade being replaced.
  • 📍 Keep the 26-inch blade on the driver side and the 18-inch blade on the passenger side.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile work gloves.
  • Use your hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it remains raised.
  • Place the thick microfiber towel between the metal arm and windshield.

Step 2: Release the Old Driver-Side Blade

  • Rotate the blade so it sits nearly perpendicular to the metal wiper arm.
  • Use your thumb to press the blade’s release tab where the blade connects to the arm.
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade toward the open end of the arm attachment.
  • Guide the blade out of the arm carefully. Do not use pliers or force the connector.
  • Compare the connectors before installing the new blade.

Step 3: Install the 26-Inch Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your hands to position the new 26-inch blade’s adapter in the same direction as the removed blade.
  • Slide the wiper arm attachment into the adapter until it clicks securely into place.
  • Pull gently on the blade by hand to verify that the locking tab is engaged.
  • Rotate the blade until its rubber edge faces the windshield.

Step 4: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper

  • Hold the metal arm firmly with one hand and remove the thick microfiber towel with the other.
  • Use your hand to lower the arm slowly until the blade rests on the windshield.
  • Never release the raised arm and let it spring downward.

Step 5: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade

  • Move the thick microfiber towel beneath the passenger-side blade.
  • Use your hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm.
  • Press the release tab with your thumb and slide the old blade out of the arm attachment.
  • Use your hands to install the new 18-inch blade until the adapter clicks and locks.
  • Pull gently on the blade to verify it cannot slide free.
  • Remove the towel and lower the arm carefully onto the windshield.

Step 6: Check Blade Position

  • Use your hands to confirm both rubber wiping edges sit flat against the windshield.
  • Check that the 26-inch blade is on the driver side and the 18-inch blade is on the passenger side.
  • Remove the safety glasses and nitrile work gloves after the work area is clear.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Wet the windshield with washer fluid before testing the new blades. Never test new blades on dry glass.
  • ✅ Start your Malibu and operate the windshield washers and wipers at low speed.
  • ✅ Confirm both blades move smoothly, clear the glass, and do not strike each other or the windshield trim.
  • ✅ Stop the wipers immediately if a blade loosens, twists, or makes contact with surrounding trim.
