🔧 Prius - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the two front wiper blades restores clear, streak-free wiping and helps prevent windshield scratches. Your Prius uses different blade lengths on the driver and passenger sides, so install each blade in the correct position.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not lift the wiper arms until they are placed in the maintenance position.
- ⚠️ Never allow a bare metal wiper arm to snap against the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Keep the Prius powered off while handling the wiper arms.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Windshield protection towel
- Nitrile work gloves

Choose direct-fit blades with the correct Toyota push-button/top-lock adapters. Replace both front blades together for even wiping performance.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Prius on level ground and engage the parking brake.
- 📏 Compare the new blades with the old ones before removing anything. The 28-inch blade belongs on the driver side.
- 🧼 Clean loose dirt from the windshield so it cannot scratch the glass.
- 🔌 Leave the wiper arms folded down until maintenance mode is activated.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Place the Wipers in Maintenance Position
- Turn the Prius on, and then turn it completely off with the POWER button.
- Within approximately 45 seconds, move the wiper control stalk upward to the MIST position and hold it for at least two seconds.
- Release the stalk when both wipers move upward and stop near the center of the windshield.
- If they do not move, power the Prius on and off and repeat the sequence.
Step 2: Protect the Windshield
- Put on the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
- Place the windshield protection towel under the driver-side blade.
- Carefully lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the glass. Lift only as far as needed.
- Replace one blade at a time.
Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Blade
- Rotate the old blade slightly so you can see its center adapter.
- Use your fingers to press the adapter’s release button or open its small locking cover, depending on the direct-fit blade installed.
- While holding the release, slide the blade toward the open end of the wiper arm until it disengages.
- Slowly lower the bare arm onto the windshield protection towel. Do not leave it standing unattended.
Step 4: Install the 28-Inch Driver-Side Blade
- Remove the protective packaging from the 28-inch driver-side wiper blade by hand.
- Align the blade adapter with the end of the driver-side arm.
- Slide the blade into the arm until the locking button clicks or the locking cover closes fully.
- Gently pull on the blade to confirm it is locked.
- Lower the wiper arm carefully onto the windshield.
Step 5: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade
- Move the windshield protection towel beneath the passenger-side blade.
- Lift the passenger-side arm and use your fingers to press the adapter release or open its locking cover.
- Slide the old blade out of the arm, then lower the bare arm onto the towel.
- Install the 16-inch passenger-side wiper blade and slide it into place until it clicks or locks securely.
- Gently pull on the blade to verify the connection, then carefully lower the arm.
Step 6: Return the Wipers to Their Parked Position
- Remove the windshield protection towel and confirm both arms are resting against the glass.
- Turn the Prius on and briefly operate the wiper control stalk using the MIST position.
- The wipers should sweep once and return to their normal parked position below the hood edge.
✅ After Repair
- 💧 Spray windshield-washer fluid and operate the wipers through several cycles.
- 👀 Confirm both blades move smoothly without streaking, chattering, striking each other, or contacting the windshield trim.
- 🔒 Stop immediately if a blade slips or looks loose, then switch the Prius off and reseat its adapter.
- 🗑️ Remove any plastic blade protectors before operating the wipers.
