🔧 Suburban - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Your Suburban uses two 22-inch front wiper blades attached to J-hook wiper arms. Replacement is simple, but protect the windshield because an uncovered metal arm can snap down and crack the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Replace one blade at a time so the second blade provides a reference.
- ⚠️ Never allow the uncovered metal wiper arm to rest against the windshield.
- ⚠️ Do not turn on the wipers while either arm is raised.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Microfiber towel (minimum 16-by-16-inch)
- Nitrile work gloves
- Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚙 Park your Suburban on level ground, shift into Park, turn off the ignition, and set the parking brake.
- 📏 Confirm both replacement blades are 22 inches and include adapters compatible with a standard J-hook arm.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
- 🧼 Clean loose dirt from the lower windshield before raising the arms.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the windshield
- Place the microfiber towel flat on the windshield beneath the driver-side blade.
- The towel cushions the glass if the spring-loaded metal arm slips.
Step 2: Raise the driver-side wiper arm
- Using your gloved hands, lift the driver-side arm away from the windshield until it stays raised.
- Hold the arm securely near the blade connection.
- Keep control of the spring-loaded arm.
Step 3: Release the old driver-side blade
- Using your gloved fingers, rotate the blade until it sits roughly perpendicular to the arm.
- Locate the small locking tab where the blade connects to the curved J-hook. A J-hook is the hook-shaped end of the metal wiper arm.
- Press or lift the locking tab with your gloved finger, depending on the blade design.
- While holding the tab, slide the blade downward toward the base of the arm until it clears the hook.
- Guide the hook out through the opening in the blade adapter.
Step 4: Secure the uncovered arm
- Using your gloved hands, carefully lower the uncovered arm onto the microfiber towel.
- Do not place the bare metal arm directly against the glass.
Step 5: Install the new driver-side blade
- Using your gloved hands, raise the arm and hold it securely.
- Turn the new blade so its rubber wiping edge faces the windshield.
- Guide the J-hook through the large opening in the blade adapter.
- Pull the blade upward into the hook until the adapter clicks and locks.
- Gently tug the blade with your gloved hands to confirm it cannot slide off.
- No bolt torque is required because the blade uses a locking clip.
Step 6: Lower the driver-side blade
- Using both gloved hands, slowly lower the arm until the rubber blade rests on the windshield.
- Do not release the arm and let it strike the glass.
Step 7: Replace the passenger-side blade
- Move the microfiber towel beneath the passenger-side blade.
- Using your gloved hands, repeat Steps 2 through 6 on the passenger side.
- Confirm the 22-inch blade is fully locked into the J-hook before lowering the arm.
Step 8: Inspect the installation
- Using your gloved hands, verify both blades sit flat against the windshield.
- Check that the rubber edges are not twisted and that both locking tabs are closed.
- Remove the microfiber towel from the windshield.
✅ After Repair
- 💧 Start your Suburban and spray windshield-washer fluid onto the glass.
- 🔍 Run the wipers at low speed and confirm both blades move smoothly without skipping, streaking, or contacting the windshield trim.
- 🛑 Turn the wipers off immediately if a blade loosens or makes hard contact with anything.
- ✨ If streaking remains, clean the windshield and blade edges with a damp microfiber towel.
