🔧 Sonata - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing both front wiper blades restores clear, streak-free wiping and helps prevent windshield scratches. Your Sonata uses a 26-inch driver-side blade and an 18-inch passenger-side blade with standard J-hook attachments.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before handling the wiper arms.
  • Do not allow a bare metal wiper arm to snap against the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • Replace one blade at a time so the other blade provides an installation reference.
  • Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Thick microfiber towel
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 26-inch driver-side front wiper blade - Qty: 1
  • 18-inch passenger-side front wiper blade - Qty: 1

Replace in pairs so both sides wipe evenly. Select blades supplied with a standard J-hook adapter.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Sonata on level ground and switch the ignition completely off.
  • Make sure the windshield is clean and dry.
  • Place the new blades beside the correct sides: 26 inches on the driver side and 18 inches on the passenger side.
  • No service-mode menu or scan tool is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the Windshield

  • Put on the safety glasses.
  • Place the thick microfiber towel on the windshield directly below the driver-side blade.
  • The towel cushions the glass if the spring-loaded arm slips.

Step 2: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Use your hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays raised.
  • Hold the metal arm securely while working. Do not release it without a blade attached.

Step 3: Release the Old Driver-Side Blade

  • Rotate the blade until it is nearly perpendicular to the metal arm.
  • Find the small locking tab where the blade connects to the curved J-shaped end of the arm.
  • Press the locking tab with your thumb, then use your hand to slide the blade down toward the base of the arm.
  • Guide the blade around the open end of the J-hook and remove it.
  • Note the old blade’s direction before removal.

Step 4: Install the New Driver-Side Blade

  • Remove any shipping cover from the 26-inch blade by hand.
  • Confirm the standard J-hook adapter is firmly installed on the new blade.
  • Pass the curved end of the arm through the large opening in the blade adapter.
  • Use your hand to pull the blade upward into the J-hook until the lock clicks.
  • Gently tug the blade downward to confirm it is locked. It must not slide out.

Step 5: Lower the Driver-Side Arm

  • Remove the thick microfiber towel from beneath the arm.
  • Use both hands to lower the arm gently until the rubber blade rests on the windshield.
  • Do not let the arm drop onto the glass.

Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade

  • Place the thick microfiber towel beneath the passenger-side wiper arm.
  • Raise the arm by hand and rotate the old blade perpendicular to it.
  • Press the adapter’s locking tab, then slide the old blade toward the base of the arm and off the J-hook.
  • Guide the 18-inch replacement blade onto the J-hook and pull it upward until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the blade to verify that the lock is engaged.
  • Remove the thick microfiber towel, then lower the arm carefully onto the windshield.

Step 7: Check Blade Position

  • Use your hand to confirm both rubber wiping edges sit flat against the windshield.
  • Check that the 26-inch blade is on the driver side and the 18-inch blade is on the passenger side.
  • Remove any protective covers from the rubber edges before operating the wipers.

✅ After Repair

  • Switch the ignition on and spray windshield-washer fluid.
  • Run the wipers at low speed for several cycles.
  • Confirm that both blades move smoothly without striking each other, the windshield pillars, or the lower trim.
  • If a blade chatters or lifts, switch the ignition off and recheck that its adapter is fully locked and the blade is facing the correct direction.
