🔧 Optima - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
The front turn signal bulbs are replaced through the rear of each headlamp housing under the hood. No headlamp removal, wiring repair, or vehicle programming is normally required.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn off the engine and all exterior lights before touching the bulb socket.
- 🌡️ Allow the headlamp area to cool before working near it.
- 🧤 Wear clean gloves to keep moisture and contamination off the new bulb.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- LED inspection flashlight
- Clean nitrile gloves

- Front turn signal bulb (amber, 28/8-watt dual-filament specification) - Qty: 1
- Front turn signal bulbs (amber, 28/8-watt dual-filament specification) - Qty: 2 if replacing in pairs
Replacing both sides helps keep brightness and color consistent.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Optima on level ground, shift into Park, and apply the parking brake.
- 💡 Switch the headlights and turn signals off, then remove the ignition key or keep the smart key away from the car.
- 🧊 Wait several minutes if the exterior lights were recently operating.
- 📦 Compare the new bulb with the removed bulb before installing it. The base tabs and electrical contacts must match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood
- Wear safety glasses and pull the hood-release handle beneath the driver-side dashboard.
- Release the secondary hood latch at the front edge and raise the hood.
- Secure the hood fully before reaching into the engine compartment.
Step 2: Locate the turn signal bulb socket
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to look behind the affected headlamp assembly.
- Find the turn signal socket at the rear of the headlamp housing. It is the socket aligned with the amber turn signal section at the outer side of the lamp.
- A bulb socket is the removable plastic holder that connects the bulb to the vehicle wiring.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Put on clean nitrile gloves.
- Grip the plastic socket directly by hand. Do not pull on its wires.
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise approximately one-quarter turn, then pull it straight out of the headlamp housing.
- If access is tight, reposition your hand rather than using pliers, which can crack the socket.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Hold the socket with one clean nitrile glove while gently pressing the bulb into the socket.
- While keeping light inward pressure on the bulb, rotate it counterclockwise and lift it out.
- Inspect the socket with the LED inspection flashlight. Stop if the plastic is melted, the contacts are green with corrosion, or the wiring insulation is damaged.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Using clean nitrile gloves, align the bulb’s offset base pins with the matching slots in the socket.
- Press the bulb gently into the socket and rotate it clockwise until it locks.
- Do not force the bulb. If it will not lock, remove it and realign the offset pins.
- Match the base before applying any pressure.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to align the socket tabs with the openings in the headlamp housing.
- Insert the socket completely and rotate it clockwise by hand until it stops securely.
- No torque specification applies; the socket is hand-tightened with a quarter-turn lock.
- Confirm the socket seal sits evenly so water cannot enter the headlamp.
Step 7: Repeat on the opposite side if replacing both bulbs
- Use the same clean nitrile gloves and LED inspection flashlight to repeat Steps 2 through 6 on the other headlamp.
- Keep each socket with its original headlamp housing.
Step 8: Close the hood
- Check the engine compartment with the LED inspection flashlight and remove all tools and packaging.
- Lower the hood and press it closed securely.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Switch on the hazard lights and confirm both front turn signals flash brightly at the same rate.
- ↔️ Test the left and right turn signals separately.
- ⚡ Rapid flashing usually means a bulb is incorrect, not fully seated, defective, or another turn signal bulb has failed.
- 💧 Check that the socket remains locked if condensation appears inside the headlamp.
- 🖥️ No scan-tool reset, coding, or infotainment procedure is required.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
