📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.

- 🧰 Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint pinch bolt and both control arm mounting bolts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts on the side you are repairing.
- Turn each lug nut about half a turn only. Do not remove them yet.
- Break lug nuts loose on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack at the front jacking point to lift the front of your Escape.
- Place jack stands under the proper front support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to make sure it is stable before continuing.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the front wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position
- Use a paint marker to mark around the control arm mounting points where they meet the subframe.
- This helps you place the new arm close to the old position before alignment.
- This does not replace an alignment.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Pinch Bolt
- Find the lower ball joint where the control arm connects to the steering knuckle behind the brake rotor.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt.
- If the nut spins, hold it with the correct wrench while turning the bolt with the 15mm socket.
- Discard the old pinch bolt and nut if your replacement hardware includes new ones.
Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Use a ball joint separator to separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
- Use a flat pry bar carefully between the control arm and knuckle if extra downward pressure is needed.
- Use a rubber mallet to tap the control arm only if it is stuck.
- Do not strike the brake rotor, axle shaft, or aluminum steering knuckle directly with a steel hammer.
Step 7: Support the Control Arm
- Use one hand to support the control arm while removing the mounting bolts.
- The arm is not extremely heavy, but it can drop suddenly when the bolts are removed.
Step 8: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use an 18mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the rear control arm mounting bolt.
- If needed, hold the opposite side with an 18mm wrench.
- Set the bolt aside only if it will be reused. Replace it if new hardware is supplied.
Step 9: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the front control arm mounting bolt.
- If needed, hold the opposite side with a 21mm wrench.
- Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
- Note the arm angle before removal.
Step 10: Compare the Old and New Control Arms
- Place the old and new control arms side by side on the ground.
- Make sure the bushing locations, ball joint position, and mounting holes match.
- Use needle-nose pliers only if you need to remove a shipping clip or protective cap from the new arm.
Step 11: Install the New Control Arm
- Position the new control arm into the subframe.
- Install the front mounting bolt by hand first.
- Install the rear mounting bolt by hand next.
- Use an 18mm socket and 21mm socket only to snug the bolts at this stage.
- Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts while the suspension is hanging.
Step 12: Reconnect the Ball Joint
- Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Use a flat pry bar carefully if you need to move the control arm slightly downward.
- Install the new lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
- Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the pinch bolt to Torque to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use a floor jack under the outer end of the control arm to raise it until the vehicle just starts to lift slightly off the jack stand.
- This puts the suspension near normal ride height.
- This step protects the new rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.
Step 14: Final-Torque the Control Arm Bolts
- Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench on the rear control arm mounting bolt.
- Tighten the rear mounting bolt to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench on the front control arm mounting bolt.
- Tighten the front mounting bolt to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
- If the bolt turns the nut, hold the nut with an 18mm wrench or 21mm wrench as needed.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel
- Remove the floor jack from under the control arm.
- Install the wheel by hand.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Escape to the ground.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side if Replacing Both
- Use the same tools and steps for the other front control arm.
- Replacing both sides together gives the most even steering feel and suspension response.

- ✅ Check that all bolts are fully seated and torqued.
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for binding, popping, or rubbing.
- ✅ Take a slow test drive first. Avoid highway speeds until everything feels normal.
- ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment as soon as possible after replacing the control arm.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 19mm socket and torque wrench.
