🔧 Accord - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

The front lower ball joint connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm. On your Accord, replacement requires removing the steering knuckle and pressing the joint out and in with dedicated adapters.

Assumption: These instructions cover one front lower ball joint; repeat on the opposite side if needed.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ This is a steering and suspension repair. Incorrect installation can cause loss of vehicle control.
  • ⚡ Your Accord has a high-voltage hybrid system. Do not touch orange cables or hybrid-system connectors; high-voltage isolation is not required for this repair.
  • 🛑 Support the Accord with jack stands on the approved front support points. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • 🔩 Use a hydraulic shop press with correctly sized adapters. Hammering the joint can damage the aluminum steering knuckle.
  • 🧤 Wear safety glasses and gloves when using the press or striking the knuckle.
  • 🔌 A 12-volt battery disconnect is not normally required. Keep the ignition off and the key away from the vehicle.
  • 📐 A four-wheel alignment is required after completing the repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park the Accord on level, solid ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, switch the vehicle off, and keep the key away.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • 🚫 Do not open a door or press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.
  • 📱 No infotainment service mode or scan-tool command is needed for this repair.
  • 🔧 Arrange access to a hydraulic press before disassembly. A shop can often press the old joint out and the new joint in after you bring them the removed knuckle.
  • 🧼 Clean the replacement joint and confirm its snap ring and protective boot are undamaged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the wheel and spindle nut

  • Use a flat-tip screwdriver and hammer to lift the staked edge of the spindle nut from the axle groove.
  • With the Accord still on the ground, use a 36mm axle-nut socket and breaker bar to loosen the spindle nut.
  • Use a 19mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen the five wheel nuts one-half turn.

Step 2: Raise and support the front

  • Use the floor jack at the approved front-center jacking point.
  • Place both jack stands under the approved side support points, then lower the Accord onto them.
  • Use a 19mm deep socket and ratchet to remove the wheel nuts and wheel.
  • Slide the removed wheel under the body as a secondary precaution.

Step 3: Remove the brake caliper and rotor

  • Use a 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Lift off the caliper and bracket together. Suspend them with mechanic’s wire; never let the brake hose carry their weight.
  • Use a flat-tip screwdriver to remove any rotor retaining screws if fitted, then slide off the brake rotor.
  • If the brake hose prevents safe knuckle removal, use a 10mm flare-nut wrench to disconnect it. Plug the open line immediately.
  • Do not press the brake pedal now.

Step 4: Disconnect the wheel-speed sensor

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the wheel-speed sensor harness brackets.
  • Release the connector by hand and move the harness away from the knuckle.
  • Do not pull on the wires or strike the sensor. A damaged sensor will turn on ABS and stability-control warnings.

Step 5: Separate the outer tie-rod end

  • Use a 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the tie-rod end self-locking nut. Use a 6mm hex-bit socket to hold the stud if it spins.
  • Install the tie-rod end separator and tighten it until the stud releases from the steering arm.
  • Do not strike the threaded stud directly with the hammer.

Step 6: Separate the lower ball joint

  • Use a 22mm socket and breaker bar to remove the lower ball joint self-locking nut.
  • Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm and steering knuckle, then tighten it until the taper releases.
  • Support the steering knuckle so it cannot fall or pull on the axle.
  • Leave the separator aligned and square.

Step 7: Release the axle from the hub

  • Remove the loosened spindle nut with the 36mm axle-nut socket and ratchet.
  • Thread the old spindle nut backward until it is flush with the axle end.
  • Use a brass drift punch and 32-ounce hammer to push the axle inward without damaging its threads.
  • Remove the old nut and support the axle. Do not allow the inner CV joint to pull apart.

Step 8: Remove the steering knuckle

  • Use a paint marker to mark the strut-to-knuckle relationship as a reference for reassembly.
  • Support the knuckle by hand or with the floor jack.
  • Use a 22mm socket, 22mm combination wrench, and breaker bar to remove the two strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts.
  • Guide the axle splines out of the hub and remove the steering knuckle.
  • Do not place the knuckle’s weight on the brake dust shield or wheel-speed sensor.

Step 9: Remove the old ball joint

  • Use a wire brush to clean the ball joint, snap ring, and surrounding knuckle bore.
  • Use external snap-ring pliers to remove the old snap ring.
  • Place the knuckle squarely on the hub support fixture beneath the hydraulic shop press.
  • Install Honda-compatible ball joint press adapters that support the knuckle around the ball joint bore without touching the wheel hub or dust shield.
  • Use the hydraulic shop press to push the old ball joint out in the direction opposite its installation flange.
  • Stop immediately if the knuckle tilts, cracks, or requires unusual force.

Step 10: Press in the new ball joint

  • Use the wire brush to clean corrosion from the empty bore. Do not grind or enlarge it.
  • Position the new ball joint squarely in the same orientation as the original.
  • Use the hydraulic shop press and Honda-compatible adapters to press only against the joint’s solid outer housing.
  • Press until the joint is fully seated against the knuckle shoulder.
  • Use external snap-ring pliers to install the new snap ring. Confirm it is completely seated around the groove.
  • Inspect the rubber boot. Replace the joint if the boot was cut or crushed during pressing.

Step 11: Reinstall the steering knuckle

  • Guide the axle splines into the hub by hand. Do not hammer the axle through the bearing.
  • Align the paint marks and install the strut-to-knuckle bolts.
  • Use a 22mm socket, 22mm combination wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the strut-to-knuckle nuts to Torque to 157 Nm (116 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new spindle nut by hand, but do not perform final tightening yet.

Step 12: Connect the ball joint and tie-rod end

  • Insert the lower ball joint stud into the lower control arm and install a new self-locking nut.
  • Use a 22mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
  • Insert the tie-rod end into the steering arm and install a new self-locking nut.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the tie-rod end nut to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs). Use a 6mm hex-bit socket if the stud turns.

Step 13: Reinstall the sensor, rotor, and caliper

  • Route the wheel-speed sensor harness exactly as it was originally routed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the sensor harness fasteners to Torque to 9.8 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
  • Install the brake rotor by hand.
  • Position the caliper and bracket over the rotor without twisting the brake hose.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the caliper-bracket bolts to Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
  • If the hose was disconnected, install two new sealing washers and use a 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the banjo bolt to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Tighten the spindle nut

  • Use a 36mm axle-nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the new spindle nut to Torque to 245 Nm (181 ft-lbs).
  • Use the brass drift punch and hammer to stake the nut securely into the axle groove.
  • Confirm the staked section fills the groove without cracking.

Step 15: Install the wheel

  • Install the wheel and hand-thread all five wheel nuts.
  • Use the floor jack to remove the jack stands, then lower the Accord until the tire just touches the ground.
  • Use a 19mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Bleed the brake if opened

  • If the brake hose was disconnected, fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
  • Use a 10mm flare-nut wrench and clear bleeder hose to bleed the affected caliper until no bubbles remain.
  • Use the 10mm flare-nut wrench and torque wrench to tighten the bleeder screw to Torque to 8.8 Nm (6.5 ft-lbs).
  • Keep the reservoir above its minimum mark throughout bleeding.

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Before moving the Accord, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • 🔍 Check that the ball joint snap ring is seated and every hose and sensor wire is correctly routed.
  • 💧 If the brake hose was opened, inspect its connection and bleeder screw for leaks while a helper holds brake pressure.
  • 🚗 Drive slowly in a safe area. Listen for clunks and confirm the steering returns smoothly.
  • 📐 Have a four-wheel alignment performed immediately. Knuckle removal can change camber and toe.
  • 💡 If ABS, stability-control, steering, or brake warnings remain illuminated, stop driving and have the systems scanned.
  • 🔩 Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
