🔧 Outback - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

The front lower ball joints connect the steering knuckles to the lower control arms. Replace them if they have looseness, damaged boots, knocking noises, or failed inspection. This procedure covers both front ball joints; replacing them in pairs is recommended.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Outback with jack stands on solid, level ground. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep your hands clear of the loaded suspension while separating the control arm and steering knuckle.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry the steering-knuckle slot open excessively. The cast knuckle can crack.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull the steering knuckle outward far enough to separate the front CV axle joint.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses when working around rust, penetrating oil, or striking tools.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on firm, level ground. Select Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Chock both rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • 🧊 Allow the brakes and exhaust system to cool completely.
  • 🧴 Apply penetrating oil to each ball-joint pinch bolt and castle nut. Allow at least 15 minutes for it to soak in.
  • 🔍 Inspect the replacement joints before starting. Their tapered studs, boots, and retaining grooves must match the removed joints.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, battery registration, or electronic calibration is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 19mm lug-nut socket and breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while your Outback is still on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Place the hydraulic floor jack beneath the reinforced front-center lifting point.
  • Raise the front and position the jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points.
  • Lower your Outback onto the stands, then gently push the body to verify that it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug-nut socket and ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and slide them beneath the side rails as an additional precaution.

Step 4: Clean and Inspect the Ball-Joint Hardware

  • Use the brass wire brush to clean rust from the horizontal pinch bolt, the bottom castle nut, and the exposed ball-joint stud.
  • Apply more penetrating oil where the ball joint enters the steering knuckle.
  • The pinch bolt crosses the steering knuckle and clamps the ball-joint housing in place.

Step 5: Remove the Castle Nut Cotter Pin

  • Use the needle-nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the ball-joint stud.
  • A cotter pin is the small locking pin passing through the stud and castle nut.
  • Discard the old cotter pin. Never reuse it.

Step 6: Loosen the Ball-Joint Castle Nut

  • Use the 19mm six-point socket and breaker bar to loosen the castle nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded onto the stud by three or four turns. This prevents the control arm from dropping suddenly.

Step 7: Separate the Ball-Joint Stud from the Control Arm

  • Position the ball-joint separator between the lower control arm and ball-joint housing.
  • Tighten the separator until the tapered stud releases from the control arm.
  • A tapered stud is cone-shaped and locks tightly into its matching hole.
  • Use the 19mm six-point socket to remove the loosened castle nut completely.
  • Keep fingers away when the taper releases.

Step 8: Remove the Steering-Knuckle Pinch Bolt

  • Support the lower control arm lightly with the hydraulic floor jack.
  • Use the 14mm six-point socket and 14mm combination wrench to remove the pinch-bolt nut and bolt.
  • If the bolt is stuck, apply penetrating oil and turn it with the breaker bar. Use the 16-ounce ball-peen hammer only to tap the bolt through after protecting its threads with the loosened nut.
  • Discard damaged or heavily corroded pinch-bolt hardware.

Step 9: Extract the Old Ball Joint

  • Install the Subaru-style ball-joint extractor according to its supplied arrangement, then tighten it to pull the joint straight out of the steering knuckle.
  • If necessary, use the small flat-blade screwdriver only to clean the entrance of the knuckle slot. Do not drive it deeply into the slot.
  • Use the small pry bar to guide the control arm downward while supporting the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Do not allow the brake hose, wheel-speed-sensor wire, or CV axle to carry the knuckle’s weight.
  • Extraction tools reduce knuckle-cracking risk.

Step 10: Clean the Steering-Knuckle Bore

  • Use the brass wire brush to remove rust and debris from the ball-joint bore and pinch-bolt opening.
  • Use the work light to inspect the knuckle for cracks, severe rust expansion, or a distorted pinch slot.
  • Stop the repair and replace the knuckle if it is cracked or cannot clamp the joint securely.

Step 11: Install the New Ball Joint

  • Apply a very thin film of anti-seize compound to the outside cylindrical body of the new joint. Keep it off the tapered stud, threads, boot, and pinch surfaces.
  • Align the joint correctly and push it fully into the steering-knuckle bore by hand.
  • Use the rubber mallet only for light seating taps on the joint housing. Never strike the threaded stud.
  • Confirm that the joint is fully seated and that its retaining groove aligns with the pinch-bolt passage.

Step 12: Install the New Pinch Bolt

  • Insert the new pinch bolt through the steering knuckle and the ball-joint retaining groove.
  • Install the new locknut and use the 14mm six-point socket, 14mm combination wrench, and torque wrench to tighten it.
  • Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
  • Use the paint marker to mark the bolt and nut after tightening.

Step 13: Connect the Ball Joint to the Control Arm

  • Use the small pry bar to guide the control arm down while inserting the clean, dry tapered stud into the arm.
  • Raise the control arm carefully with the hydraulic floor jack until the taper seats.
  • Install the new castle nut. Use the 19mm six-point socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter-pin holes do not align, tighten the nut only to the next available slot. Never loosen the nut to align it.
  • Install a new cotter pin with the needle-nose pliers, then bend its ends securely around the nut.

Step 14: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 using the same listed tools.
  • Compare both sides and verify that the boots are not twisted, cut, or pinched.

Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install each wheel and thread the wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 19mm lug-nut socket and ratchet to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
  • Raise your Outback with the hydraulic floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 19mm lug-nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Inspect both pinch bolts, castle nuts, cotter pins, and ball-joint boots before driving.
  • 🛞 Turn the steering wheel fully left and right. Verify that no boot, brake hose, or wheel-speed-sensor wire is stretched or rubbing.
  • 🚗 Begin with a slow test drive. Listen for clunks and verify that steering response is normal.
  • 📏 Have the front-wheel alignment checked if the steering wheel is off-center, the vehicle pulls, or uneven tire wear is present.
  • 🔧 Recheck the visible hardware and wheel-nut torque after 80-160 km.
  • 🧴 If the new joints include grease fittings, use the appropriate grease gun to add chassis grease only until the boots begin to expand. Do not overfill them.
