🔧 Trax - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads requires lifting your Trax, removing both front wheels, retracting each caliper piston, and installing new pads and hardware. Replace the pads on both sides so braking remains even.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Trax on firm, level ground. Select Park, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🧱 Place rubber wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
  • 🔍 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount before compressing the pistons so it cannot overflow.
  • 📱 No infotainment menu, scan tool, electronic parking-brake mode, coding, or battery registration is required.
  • 🔄 Complete one front brake at a time. The assembled side can serve as a reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and support the front

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the reinforced front lifting point shown in the owner’s manual.
  • Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points, then slowly lower your Trax onto them.
  • Gently push the body to confirm it is stable before removing either wheel.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby as secondary support.

Step 3: Remove the front wheels

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Lift off both front wheels and place them flat away from your work area.

Step 4: Inspect the brake assembly

  • Use the inspection light to check the rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or a heavy outer ridge.
  • Check the rubber brake hose for cracks, wetness, or swelling. Stop the repair if fluid is leaking.
  • Compare inner and outer pad thickness. A large difference can indicate a sticking caliper or guide pin.

Step 5: Remove the lower caliper guide-pin bolt

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide-pin bolt.
  • If the guide pin turns, hold its flats with the 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt.
  • A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that lets the caliper move evenly as the brakes are applied.

Step 6: Swing up and support the caliper

  • Carefully pivot the caliper upward around its upper guide pin.
  • Use the brake caliper hanger to support the caliper from the suspension spring or strut.
  • Do not pull, twist, or place weight on the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads straight out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
  • Note the orientation of the wear indicator before discarding the old pads.
  • Photograph the original layout before removal.

Step 8: Clean and inspect the bracket

  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the nylon brake cleaning brush to clean the pad-contact areas.
  • Use the 17mm open-end wrench only as needed to steady the guide pin while checking that it slides smoothly.
  • Do not get lubricant or dirty residue on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 9: Retract the caliper piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the 6-inch brake caliper piston compressor to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir with the inspection light while compressing the piston. Stop if the fluid approaches the rim.
  • If the piston will not move smoothly, do not force it; the caliper may require replacement.

Step 10: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Press the new front brake pad hardware into the caliper bracket by hand until fully seated.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Keep all lubricant away from the rotor and pad friction material.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper

  • Swing the caliper down over the new pads and remove the brake caliper hanger.
  • Make sure the rubber guide-pin boot is not twisted or pinched.
  • Start the lower guide-pin bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench. Hold the guide pin with the 17mm open-end wrench if needed, then torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the opposite front brake.
  • Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set.

Step 13: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Trax slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Restore brake-pedal pressure

  • With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Do not move your Trax until a firm pedal is restored.
  • Use the inspection light to check the reservoir. Adjust only with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid, keeping the level between MIN and MAX.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady and should not sink toward the floor.
  • 🧼 Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner to remove any fingerprints or lubricant from the rotor surfaces.
  • 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • 🛑 Bed in the pads with approximately 8 moderate stops from 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with hot brakes.
  • 🌡️ Drive for 10 minutes afterward without heavy braking so the brakes can cool.
  • 🔩 Recheck wheel-nut torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
  • ⚠️ Stop driving if the vehicle pulls, the pedal remains soft, warning lamps stay on, or grinding continues.
