🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Check the Brake-Fluid Level
- Put on mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
- Clean around the cap with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a nylon brake-cleaning brush, then remove the cap by hand.
- If fluid is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a brake-fluid syringe. Compressing the caliper pistons will raise the level.
- Place the cap loosely over the reservoir to keep dirt out.
Step 2: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your CR-V is still on the ground.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 2-ton floor jack under the reinforced front-center jacking point on the front subframe.
- Raise your CR-V and position 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points behind the front wheels.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands. Leave the floor jack lightly touching the center point as a backup without carrying the vehicle’s weight.
- Push the body gently to verify that it is stable before continuing.
Step 4: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
- Finish one brake side before opening the other.
Step 5: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust from the caliper and pad area.
- Inspect the rubber brake hose for cracks, wetness, twisting, or swelling.
- Inspect the rotor for cracks, heavy grooves, blue spots, or major rust scaling. Rotor thickness must be measured separately if wear is questionable.
- Use the opposite assembled brake as a visual reference if needed.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide-pin bolt.
- If the guide pin turns, hold its flats with a 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 12mm socket.
- The guide pin is the sliding pin that allows the caliper to move as the pads wear.
Step 7: Swing Up and Support the Caliper
- Pivot the caliper upward around its upper guide pin.
- If movement is tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the old pad and caliper to create slight clearance. Do not gouge the rotor or damage the rubber boot.
- Support the raised caliper with a caliper hanger hook attached to a solid suspension point.
- Do not pull, twist, or stretch the brake hose.
Step 8: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-retaining clips from the bracket.
- Note the orientation of the wear indicator on the old inner pad and install the new pad in the same orientation.
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a nylon brake-cleaning brush to clean the pad-support areas. Do not grind or file the bracket.
Step 9: Check the Guide Pins
- Move the exposed guide pin in and out by hand. It must slide smoothly and its rubber boot must be intact.
- If removed for cleaning, wipe the pin clean and apply a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake grease by hand while wearing mechanic gloves.
- Do not use petroleum grease or anti-seize on guide pins because it can damage the rubber boots.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place the old inner pad against the caliper piston as a protective plate.
- Use a brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and completely into the caliper bore.
- Watch the reservoir while compressing the piston. If fluid approaches the top, remove the excess with a brake-fluid syringe.
- Check that the rubber piston boot folds inward evenly and is not pinched or torn.
Step 11: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new front brake pad hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand until fully seated.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
- Apply a thin film to the metal pad backing contact points if the pad manufacturer permits it.
- Keep grease completely off the rotor and pad friction surfaces.
- Install the new inner and outer pads by hand. They must slide in the bracket without binding.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper hanger hook and pivot the caliper down over the new pads.
- Make sure the guide-pin boot is not twisted or trapped.
- Start the lower guide-pin bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket and 20-150 Nm click-type torque wrench. Hold the pin with a 17mm open-end wrench if necessary.
- Torque the lower caliper guide-pin bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 12 on the other front brake using the same listed tools.
- Verify that both calipers are secured and both brake hoses are routed naturally without twisting.
Step 14: Clean and Reinstall the Wheels
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove grease or fingerprints from both rotor faces.
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern. Do not fully torque them while raised.
Step 15: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your CR-V slightly, remove the 2-ton jack stands, and lower it until the tires contact the ground.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 20-150 Nm click-type torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque the wheel nuts to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
- Remove the floor jack and rubber wheel chocks.
Step 16: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Do not move your CR-V until the pedal becomes firm.
- Check the reservoir level. Add fresh Honda-specification DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below MIN.
- Install the reservoir cap securely by hand and close the hood.

- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for approximately 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady and not sink toward the floor.
- 🔍 Inspect both front calipers and brake hoses for fluid leakage.
