🔧 Sonata - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads requires lifting your Sonata, removing both front wheels, retracting the caliper pistons, and installing a complete new pad set. Replace the pads on both front wheels so braking remains even.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level, solid pavement and support your Sonata with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust may be harmful. Do not use compressed air or blow dust away.
  • ⚠️ Allow the brakes to cool completely before beginning.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Never let a caliper hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while retracting each piston. Remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required, and the electronic parking brake does not need service mode because this repair is on the front brakes.

  • High-temperature silicone brake lubricant - Qty: 1 packet

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Sonata on level, solid ground. Shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🛞 Place rubber wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall. Clean around its cap with a shop towel before opening it.
  • 🧰 Check the fluid level. If it is already near the MAX line, use the plastic fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, battery registration, or electronic parking-brake service mode is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front End

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack at the front center lifting point on the engine-cradle crossmember.
  • Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced left and right front side support points.
  • Lower your Sonata gently onto the stands, then give the body a careful push to confirm it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly positioned under the lifting point as a backup without carrying the vehicle’s weight.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the side of the vehicle as an additional precaution.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use the safety glasses and nylon brake-cleaning brush with brake parts cleaner to remove loose dirt without creating airborne dust.
  • Inspect each rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, blue heat spots, or a pronounced outer ridge.
  • Inspect the caliper and rubber brake hose for wetness or damage. Stop the repair if you find a fluid leak.
  • Compare inner and outer pad wear. A large difference can indicate seized slide pins or a sticking caliper.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt

  • Turn the steering wheel to provide easier access to the caliper.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide-pin bolt.
  • If the guide pin rotates, hold its flat section with the 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt.
  • The guide pin allows the caliper to slide sideways and apply both pads evenly.

Step 6: Swing Up and Support the Caliper

  • Pivot the caliper upward around its upper guide pin.
  • If it will not pivot freely, remove the upper guide-pin bolt with the 14mm socket and support the entire caliper with the rubber caliper hanger.
  • Do not pull, twist, or place weight on the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift out the stainless-steel pad hardware clips.
  • Note the location of any wear indicator before discarding the old pads.
  • Use the nylon brake-cleaning brush and brake parts cleaner to clean the hardware seating areas.
  • Service one side at a time for reference.

Step 8: Check and Lubricate the Guide Pins

  • Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand, keeping track of its original location.
  • Wipe the pins clean with disposable shop towels and inspect them for rust, scoring, or bending.
  • Apply a thin coating of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to each pin. Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage the rubber boots.
  • Reinsert each pin and confirm it slides smoothly while its rubber boot remains fully seated.

Step 9: Retract the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use the disc-brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir as the piston retracts. Use the plastic fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the reservoir opening.
  • Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or requires excessive force. This can indicate a seized caliper.

Step 10: Install the New Hardware and Pads

  • Press the new front brake pad hardware into the caliper bracket by hand until fully seated.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the hardware.
  • Keep lubricant away from the rotor and all pad friction surfaces.
  • Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket. They must move freely without excessive looseness.
  • Install the pad with the wear indicator in the same position as the original pad.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper carefully over the new pads, ensuring the guide-pin boots are not twisted or pinched.
  • Install the guide-pin bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket, 17mm open-end wrench, and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten each removed guide-pin bolt to 29-43 Nm (22-32 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the other front wheel.

Step 12: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Clean the wheel-to-hub mating surfaces with the nylon brake-cleaning brush. Do not apply lubricant to the studs or nuts.
  • Install each wheel and start all nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise your Sonata slightly, then remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires are firmly on the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 88-108 Nm (65-80 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before moving your Sonata, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. The first few presses may travel farther than normal.
  • ✅ Check the brake-fluid level and adjust it to the MAX line if necessary. Reinstall the reservoir cap securely.
  • ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain firm rather than slowly sinking.
  • ✅ Look around both front calipers for leaks, loose hardware, or a twisted brake hose.
  • ✅ Perform a slow test in a traffic-free area. Confirm normal pedal feel and straight, quiet braking before entering public roads.
  • ✅ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. Unless instructed otherwise, make several moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid emergency-style stops and holding the hot brakes at a standstill during the initial bedding process.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-100 km.
