🔧 Impala - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the front brake pads requires lifting the front of your Impala, opening each brake caliper, and installing new pads and hardware. Replace the pads on both front wheels so braking remains even.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Impala on firm, level pavement. Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🛞 Place rubber wheel chocks tightly behind both rear tires.
  • 🌡️ Allow the brakes to cool completely before touching them.
  • 📖 Check the new pad set before lifting the vehicle. Both inner and outer pads must match the original pad shape.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side rear of the engine compartment. Clean around its cap before opening it.
  • 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan tool, electronic parking-brake retraction, coding, or battery registration is required for the front pads.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Check the Brake-Fluid Level

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Clean the brake-fluid reservoir cap area with a small nylon cleaning brush, then remove the cap by hand.
  • If the fluid is at the MAX line, use a plastic brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount. Retracting the caliper pistons will raise the level.
  • Set the cap loosely over the reservoir to prevent contamination.

Step 2: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Front

  • Position the 2-ton low-profile floor jack beneath the designated front lifting point.
  • Raise your Impala until the front tires clear the ground.
  • Place 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front body support points behind the front wheels. A reinforced point is the thicker, strengthened section intended to carry vehicle weight.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly onto both stands, then gently push the body to verify that it is stable.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly contacting the lifting point as secondary support without carrying the vehicle’s weight.

Step 4: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Complete one brake assembly at a time so the other side remains available as a reference.

Step 5: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner to wet and remove loose brake dust. Catch the runoff and do not blow the dust with compressed air.
  • Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, heat cracks, heavy rust, or blue hot spots.
  • Check the rubber brake hose for cracks, wetness, twisting, or swelling.
  • If the rotor is damaged or below the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor, replace both front rotors before installing the pads.

Step 6: Create Clearance for the New Pads

  • Insert a large flat-blade screwdriver through the caliper opening between the old inner pad and rotor.
  • Gently lever the old pad toward the piston just enough to create a little clearance. Do not gouge the rotor or damage the rubber piston boot.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and remove excess fluid with the plastic brake-fluid syringe if it approaches the top.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the lower and upper caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper away from the bracket without pulling or twisting the brake hose.
  • Support the caliper with a brake caliper hanger. A caliper hanger is a strong hook that holds the caliper without loading its hose.

Step 8: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Note the orientation of the wear indicator before removal. The wear indicator is the small metal tab that squeals when the pad becomes thin.
  • Remove the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket using a large flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Compare the old and new pads before continuing. Their shape, tabs, and contact points must match.

Step 9: Inspect the Guide Pins

  • Pull each guide pin carefully from its rubber boot by hand, checking one pin at a time so they return to their original positions.
  • Wipe the guide pins clean and inspect them for rust, scoring, or binding.
  • Apply a thin coat of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to each smooth guide-pin surface. Keep lubricant away from the threaded ends and rubber-sensitive areas unless the product states it is boot-safe.
  • Reinstall each pin by hand and make sure it slides freely with its rubber boot fully seated.
  • Replace damaged boots or seized guide pins before proceeding.

Step 10: Retract the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston face to distribute pressure evenly.
  • Use a disc brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and completely into the caliper bore. This tool applies straight, controlled pressure to the piston.
  • Watch the rubber piston boot and stop if it folds, tears, or becomes trapped.
  • Monitor the brake-fluid reservoir with each turn of the tool and remove excess fluid with the plastic brake-fluid syringe if necessary.
  • Slow pressure helps prevent seal damage.

Step 11: Install the New Hardware and Pads

  • Use a small nylon cleaning brush and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the pad clips.
  • Press the new front brake pad hardware clips fully into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Do not place lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surfaces.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads by hand in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Make sure both pads slide in the bracket without force or excessive looseness.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper carefully over the new pads.
  • Do not force the caliper into place. Verify that the piston is fully retracted and the pads are seated if it does not fit.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Check that the brake hose follows its natural path and is not twisted.

Step 13: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same tools and procedure to replace the pads and hardware on the other front brake assembly.
  • Verify that both calipers, guide-pin bolts, pad clips, and brake hoses are correctly positioned.

Step 14: Clean the Rotors

  • Spray both sides of each rotor with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
  • Use a clean disposable towel to remove fingerprints, lubricant, and residue.
  • Do not touch the cleaned rotor faces with greasy gloves.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 2-ton low-profile floor jack to raise your Impala slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
  • Lower the vehicle fully and remove the floor jack and wheel chocks.

Step 16: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times by foot until it feels firm.
  • Do not move your Impala until the pedal is firm. The first few pedal strokes move the pistons and pads back against the rotors.
  • Check the reservoir and adjust the level to the MAX mark with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • Install the reservoir cap securely by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. It should remain firm and should not slowly sink.
  • 🔍 Inspect both front calipers, brake hoses, and the area around the reservoir for fluid leaks.
  • 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • 🛑 Bed in the pads using 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Avoid stopping completely between applications when safe.
  • 🌡️ Drive for several minutes with minimal braking afterward so the brakes can cool.
  • ⚠️ Avoid hard braking and holding the hot pads against the rotors for the first 300-500 km unless an emergency requires it.
  • 🔧 Recheck the wheel-nut torque at 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
  • 📋 If the brake pedal remains soft, warning lights stay on, or your Impala pulls during braking, do not continue driving until the problem is diagnosed.
