- 📍 Park your Pathfinder on level pavement, shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- 📍 Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
- 📍 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
- 📍 Clean around the reservoir cap. Confirm the fluid is not already above the MAX line.
- 📍 If the reservoir is completely full, use the brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 📍 Do not disconnect the battery or open the hydraulic brake system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the front-center suspension crossmember lifting point.
- Position the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced left and right front support points.
- Lower your Pathfinder onto the stands, then gently push the body to confirm it is stable.
- Leave the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as an additional backup.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
- Slide one wheel beneath the side of your Pathfinder as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Inspect the Brakes
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust from the caliper area.
- Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or a pronounced outer lip.
- Inspect the rubber brake hose for cracks, wetness, or bulges. Stop the repair if the hose is damaged or leaking.
- If a rotor is below its stamped minimum thickness, replace both front rotors before fitting the new pads.
Step 5: Remove the Brake Caliper
- The slide pins allow the caliper to move evenly as the brakes apply.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- If a slide pin turns, hold its flat section with the 19mm combination wrench while loosening the bolt.
- Lift the caliper straight away from the rotor. Do not twist or pull the brake hose.
- Use the mechanic’s wire hanger to suspend the caliper securely from the suspension.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to carefully slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips from the bracket.
- Note the orientation of the wear indicator before discarding the old pads.
- Use brake cleaner and the nylon brake-cleaning brush to clean the pad-contact areas.
- Do not remove the large caliper-bracket bolts for a pad-only replacement.
Step 7: Check and Lubricate the Slide Pins
- Pull each slide pin from its rubber boot by hand.
- Wipe the pins clean and inspect them for rust, scoring, or binding.
- Apply a thin coating of high-temperature silicone brake grease to each pin by hand.
- Reinstall each pin into its original position and confirm it slides freely.
- Ensure each rubber boot seats completely around its pin.
- Use only silicone-safe grease on rubber boots.
Step 8: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons inward slowly and evenly.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the reservoir opening.
- Stop if a piston will not retract smoothly. Forcing a seized piston can damage the caliper.
- Do not use the flat-blade screwdriver directly against the piston faces or rubber seals.
Step 9: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new front brake pad hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake grease to the pad ears where they touch the hardware.
- Apply a thin layer to the metal backs of the pads only where they contact the caliper or piston.
- Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
- Never place grease on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
- New pads should slide without being forced.
Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper from the mechanic’s wire hanger and position it over the new pads.
- Make sure the brake hose is not twisted.
- Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to seat the bolts.
- If needed, hold the slide pin with the 19mm combination wrench.
- Use the 14mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten both slide-pin bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the other front wheel using the same listed tools.
- Confirm both calipers are secure and both brake hoses follow their original routing.
- Use brake cleaner and the nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove any grease or fingerprints from the rotor faces.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the floor jack to raise your Pathfinder slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. The first few presses may travel farther than normal.
- ✅ Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below MIN; do not overfill it.
- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain firm and should not slowly sink.
- ✅ Inspect around both front calipers for leaking fluid or loose components.
- ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a clear, safe area before entering traffic.
- ✅ Bed in the pads by making 6-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Avoid coming to a complete stop while the brakes are very hot.
- ✅ Drive for 5-10 minutes afterward with minimal braking so the brakes can cool.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 300-500 km unless required for safety.
- ✅ Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
