  • 🌡️ Allow the brakes to cool completely before touching them.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, use a brake-fluid extractor syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
  • 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan tool, battery registration, or electronic parking-brake procedure is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not fully remove the wheel nuts while your Sentra is on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack at the reinforced front lifting point and raise your Sentra high enough to position the jack stands.
  • Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points behind the front wheels.
  • Lower your Sentra gently onto the stands with the hydraulic floor jack.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as a backup without carrying the vehicle's weight.
  • Push the vehicle gently by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels by hand and slide them underneath the side of the vehicle as an additional safety measure.

Step 4: Inspect the Brakes

  • Use a flashlight and visually inspect both rotors for deep grooves, heavy rust, cracks, or blue heat spots.
  • Check the old pads for uneven wear. A large difference between the inner and outer pads can indicate sticking slide pins or a seized caliper.
  • Inspect the rubber brake hose and caliper dust boot for cracks, wetness, or damage.
  • Stop the repair if the caliper leaks, the hose is damaged, or the rotor is cracked.

Step 5: Retract the Caliper Piston Slightly

  • Place the large flat-blade screwdriver between the old inner pad and rotor.
  • Apply slow, gentle pressure with the screwdriver to move the piston inward slightly. This creates clearance for caliper removal.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and use the brake-fluid extractor syringe if the level approaches the opening.
  • Slow pressure protects the piston seal.

Step 6: Remove the Caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper away from the pads by hand.
  • Support the caliper with the brake caliper hanger hook attached to the suspension spring.
  • Do not twist, pull, or place weight on the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Remove the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the old stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
  • Note the position of any wear indicator tab before discarding the old pads.

Step 8: Clean and Inspect the Caliper Bracket

  • Spray aerosol brake cleaner onto a lint-free shop towel and wipe the bracket's pad-contact areas.
  • Use the nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose rust and debris from the clip mounting surfaces.
  • Move each slide pin gently by hand. It should travel smoothly and its rubber boot should be intact.
  • Do not use petroleum grease on the slide pins or rubber boots.

Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to push the piston straight into the caliper slowly until fully seated.
  • Use the brake-fluid extractor syringe if fluid rises too close to the reservoir opening.
  • Inspect the piston dust boot and confirm it is not pinched or torn.

Step 10: Install the New Hardware and Pads

  • Press the new front brake pad hardware clips fully into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they touch the hardware.
  • Apply a thin film to the metal backing-plate contact points specified by the pad manufacturer.
  • Keep lubricant completely off the pad material and rotor surfaces.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Confirm both pads can slide within the hardware without binding.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger hook and position the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Do not force the caliper into place or twist the brake hose.
  • Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten each slide-pin bolt to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same tools and procedure to replace the pads and hardware on the other front wheel.
  • Compare the removed pads from both sides. Major wear differences require caliper and slide-pin diagnosis before driving.

Step 13: Clean the Rotors

  • Spray aerosol brake cleaner onto a lint-free shop towel.
  • Wipe both sides of each rotor until no grease or residue remains.
  • Rotate each rotor by hand and confirm the calipers and hoses are correctly positioned.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install each front wheel by hand and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Remove the wheels stored beneath the vehicle by hand.

Step 15: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack to lift your Sentra slightly and remove both jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground fully.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm. This moves the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • 🧴 Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust it to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if needed. Do not overfill it.
  • 🔍 Check around both calipers for leaks and confirm every fastener has been installed.
  • 🚗 Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should remain firm and must not sink steadily.
  • 🛑 Perform a cautious brake test at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • 🌡️ Bed in the pads according to their manufacturer's instructions. Unless different instructions are supplied, make several moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing cooling time between stops.
  • ⛔ Avoid hard braking and do not hold the brake pedal down while the brakes are extremely hot during bedding.
  • 🔧 Recheck wheel-nut torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
