Replacing the front brake pads on your Avalon requires removing each front caliper, compressing its piston, and installing new pads and hardware. The brake rotors should also be inspected for scoring, cracking, or thickness below specification.

  • Support the caliper with a hanger. Never let it hang from the rubber brake hose.
  • Brake fluid damages paint. Clean spills immediately with water.
  • Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • The electronic parking brake operates the rear brakes and does not require service mode for front pad replacement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Avalon on firm, level ground. Shift to Park, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
  • Check the fluid level. If it is near the MAX line, use a brake fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
  • Do not leave the reservoir open. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air.
  • Confirm that the new pads match the removed pads before installation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still carrying the vehicle's weight.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Position a 2-ton floor jack beneath the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
  • Raise the vehicle and place 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points behind the front wheels.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands, then lightly shake it to verify stability.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from your work area.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Inspect the rubber brake hose for cracking, twisting, wetness, or swelling.
  • Use a rotor measuring micrometer to measure rotor thickness at several points, away from the outer rust ridge.
  • The rotor marking shows its discard thickness. Replace the rotor if it is at or below that marking, cracked, deeply scored, or heavily heat-spotted.
  • Compare inner and outer pad wear. A large difference can indicate sticking caliper slide pins or a sticking piston.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to improve access to the caliper bolts.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
  • A slide pin is the smooth pin that lets the caliper move sideways as the brakes operate.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket without pulling or twisting the brake hose.
  • Support the caliper from the suspension with a brake caliper hanger.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully if the pads are stuck, avoiding damage to the rotor and rubber boots.
  • Note the position and direction of the wear indicator on the old inboard pad.
  • Remove the stainless pad support clips from the bracket with the flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Use a small wire brush and brake cleaner to clean the clip seats. Do not grind away bracket metal.

Step 7: Check the Slide Pins

  • Move each slide pin by hand. It should move smoothly and its rubber boot should be intact.
  • If a pin binds, pull it out by hand, wipe it clean with shop towels, and inspect it for rust or pitting.
  • Apply a thin coating of Toyota-compatible high-temperature disc brake grease, then reinstall the pin without trapping air in the boot.
  • Replace damaged boots or corroded pins before driving.

Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use a brake caliper piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and evenly fully into the caliper bore.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use a brake fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston will not retract smoothly. A seized piston requires caliper repair or replacement.

Step 9: Install New Hardware and Pads

  • Press the new fitting hardware into the cleaned bracket seats by hand.
  • Apply only a very thin film of Toyota-compatible disc brake grease to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
  • Keep all grease away from the pad friction material and rotor surfaces.
  • Install the new pads in the bracket. Position the wear-indicator pad in the same inboard location and orientation as the original.
  • Ensure both pads slide freely in the bracket without excessive looseness.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads by hand. Do not force it or twist the brake hose.
  • Thread both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the other front wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Replace all front pads even if one side appears less worn.

Step 12: Clean and Reinstall the Wheels

  • Use brake cleaner and shop towels to remove greasy fingerprints from both rotor faces.
  • Install each wheel and thread all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires are fully on the ground.
  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Adjust to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if necessary.
  • Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure. The pedal should remain stable and should not sink toward the floor.
  • Inspect both front calipers and hoses for fluid leaks.
  • Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • Bed in the pads with several moderate slowdowns from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing cooling time between applications. Avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
  • Avoid holding the brake pedal firmly while stopped immediately after bedding because hot pads can transfer material unevenly to the rotors.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
