- 🔍 Look through each front wheel and inspect the rotors. Deep grooves, cracks, blue heat spots, or thickness below the rotor’s stamped minimum require rotor service.
- 🧴 Open the brake-fluid reservoir under the hood and check its level. If it is near the top, use a brake fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
- 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan tool, or electronic parking-brake procedure is required for the front brakes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not completely remove the wheel nuts while the tires are on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Use the 3-ton floor jack under the front frame lifting point and raise one side at a time.
- Place 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front frame rails, then lower the truck securely onto them.
- Keep the floor jack lightly positioned as secondary support without lifting the truck off the stands.
- Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves before handling brake components.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Remove the First Brake Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the back of the caliper is easier to reach.
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- The guide pins are the sliding pins that allow the caliper to center itself over the rotor.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use a brake caliper hanger to suspend it from the suspension.
- Do not twist, stretch, or support the caliper by its brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully slide the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
- Compare pad wear. One pad being much thinner may indicate a seized guide pin or sticking caliper.
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a small nylon brush to clean the pad-contact surfaces. Catch residue with shop towels.
Step 6: Inspect the Rotor and Caliper
- Inspect both rotor faces for cracks, heavy scoring, heat spots, or a pronounced outer ridge.
- Inspect the caliper piston boots for tears or brake-fluid leakage.
- Move each guide pin by hand. It should slide smoothly without binding.
- Stop the repair if a piston will not compress, a guide pin is seized, or brake fluid is leaking.
Step 7: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use a dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Watch the reservoir while compressing the pistons. Use a brake fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the top.
- Compress slowly to prevent reservoir overflow.
Step 8: Install New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new front brake pad hardware into the caliper bracket by hand. Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if gentle positioning is necessary.
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
- Keep lubricant off the pad friction material and rotor faces.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand. They must move freely without excessive looseness.
Step 9: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 9 on the other front wheel using the same listed tools.
- Always replace front brake pads on both sides during the same repair.
Step 11: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the truck slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the transmission in Park, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- Do not shift out of Park until the pedal is firm.
- Check the reservoir and adjust to the proper mark with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if needed.
- Use shop towels and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to remove any spilled brake fluid immediately.

- ✅ Start the engine and confirm that the brake pedal remains firm under steady pressure.
- 🔍 Check around both calipers and the brake-fluid reservoir for leaks.
- 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- 🛞 Recheck wheel-nut torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) after approximately 50 miles.
