This is a solid intermediate DIY job. You’ll replace both front rotors, both pairs of front pads, and the pad hardware. Work on one side at a time so the assembled side remains your reference.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚙 Park on solid, level ground and place the transmission in Park.
- 🧱 Chock both sides of both rear tires.
- 🛑 Release the electronic parking brake. It operates the rear brakes and doesn’t need service mode for this front repair.
- 🧴 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it’s near the MAX line, remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
- 📸 Photograph the pad orientation, wear indicator, clips, and brake-hose routing before disassembly.
- 🔩 Loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn with the 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at an approved front lifting point.
- Position the 3-ton jack stands under the reinforced front support points.
- Lower your Traverse onto the stands, then gently shake the body to confirm it’s stable.
- Remove both front wheels using the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
Step 2: Inspect the brake assembly
- Check the rubber brake hose for cracks, wetness, twisting, or bulges.
- Compare the inner and outer pad thickness. Major uneven wear can indicate a seized guide pin, sticking pad, restricted hose, or binding caliper piston.
- GM documented uneven front-pad wear on this brake design. Don’t hide a sticking component under new pads. static.nhtsa.gov
Step 3: Create piston clearance
- Use the large flat-blade screwdriver between the old outer pad and rotor to move the caliper outward slightly.
- Apply slow, gentle pressure. Don’t gouge a brake hose or use the new rotor as a pry surface.
- Watch the reservoir while the pistons move inward. Remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.
Step 4: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- Use the 17mm open-end wrench to hold each guide pin straight while turning its bolt.
- Don’t let the wrench press against or damage the caliper body.
- Lift off the caliper and support it with a caliper hanger hook.
- Don’t disconnect the brake hose. Bleeding isn’t required unless the hydraulic system is opened.
Step 5: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Remove the inner and outer pads from the bracket by hand.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to lift out the stainless pad-support clips.
- Note where the pad wear indicator sits so the replacement pad matches the original orientation.
Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove both caliper-bracket bolts.
- Hold the bracket as the final bolt comes out. It’s heavier than it looks.
- Place the bracket and bolts on a clean surface.
Step 7: Remove the old rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub.
- If rust holds it, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs using the 2-pound dead-blow hammer.
- Don’t strike the wheel studs or hit the rotor braking surface toward yourself.
- Use the wire brake-cleaning brush to remove rust and scale from the hub face.
- The new rotor must sit completely flat. Rust trapped behind it can cause pedal pulsation.
Step 8: Prepare the new rotor
- Clean both friction surfaces with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a clean lint-free towel.
- Place the new rotor squarely over the wheel studs.
- Temporarily install one wheel nut by hand to keep the rotor seated during assembly.
Step 9: Service the bracket and guide pins
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver and wire brush to clean the bracket lands where the clips sit.
- Remove one guide pin at a time by hand so they aren’t accidentally swapped.
- Wipe away old lubricant and inspect the pins, boots, and bores for corrosion or binding.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to each guide pin.
- Reinstall the pins and confirm they slide smoothly while the rubber boots remain seated.
- Install the new stainless hardware clips by hand.
- Lubricate movement points, never friction surfaces.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench for the first tightening pass.
- Torque each bracket bolt first to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs), then tighten an additional 15-30 degrees.
- Use the torque-angle gauge for the final angle. An angle specification means rotating the bolt by the stated number of degrees after the initial torque.
Step 11: Install the new pads
- Apply a very thin film of silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the stainless clips.
- Keep lubricant completely off the rotor and pad friction material.
- Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- Confirm both pads slide without excessive force or looseness.
Step 12: Compress both caliper pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both pistons.
- Use the dual-piston compression tool or two 6-inch C-clamps to push both pistons inward evenly.
- Compress them slowly while watching the brake-fluid reservoir.
- Stop if either piston tilts, binds, or requires significantly more force than the other.

Step 13: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm open-end wrench to hold the guide pin and the 14mm socket to tighten the bolt.
- Use the 3/8-inch torque wrench and torque each front guide-pin bolt to 72 Nm (53 ft-lbs).
- Remove the temporary wheel nut and rotate the rotor by hand. Light pad contact is normal.
Step 14: Repeat on the opposite side
- Repeat Steps 2-13 on the other front brake assembly.
- Replace pads and rotors on both front sides even if only one side appears badly worn.
- Compare the removed parts for signs of uneven wear or overheating.
Step 15: Reinstall and torque the wheels
- Clean the wheel-to-hub contact surfaces using the wire brake-cleaning brush.
- Install each wheel and start every nut by hand.
- Snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern using the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
- Raise your Traverse slightly with the floor jack, remove the stands, and lower it fully.
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque the wheel nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs). Chevrolet lists this specification in the owner’s manual. chevrolet.com
- Don’t apply oil, grease, or anti-seize to the wheel studs.
✅ After Repair
- 🦶 With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- 🧴 Check the brake-fluid level and adjust it between MIN and MAX using fresh DOT 3 fluid if necessary.
- 🔍 Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for 30 seconds. The pedal shouldn’t continue sinking.
- 🚫 Don’t move your Traverse if the pedal remains soft, a warning light stays on, fluid leaks, or a wheel binds.
- 🛣️ Begin with several cautious stops at walking speed in a safe open area.
- 🔥 Follow the pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. If none is provided, make 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 30 mph to 5 mph without activating ABS.
- 🌡️ Drive several minutes between stop groups to let the brakes cool. Don’t sit stopped with the pedal clamped hard immediately after bedding.
- 🔧 Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 50 miles.
