📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Elantra on firm, level ground. Shift the transmission into first gear and apply the parking brake.
- 🛞 Place rubber wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
- 🧊 Allow the brakes to cool completely before touching them.
- 📦 Confirm that the new rotors have the same diameter, thickness, and wheel-bolt pattern as the removed rotors.
- 🧴 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If the fluid is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a fluid extractor before compressing the pistons.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Keep the vehicle on the ground and use a 21mm deep socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the front-center subframe lifting point to raise the front of your Elantra.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands under the reinforced left and right front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands. Push lightly on the body to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from your work area.
- Work on one side at a time so the other side remains available as a reference.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on the side being serviced is easier to reach.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- A guide pin is the sliding pin that allows the caliper to move as the brakes are applied.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use a caliper hanger hook to support it from the suspension spring.
- Do not twist, stretch, or support the caliper by its brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use a flat-tip screwdriver to slide the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Remove the upper and lower stainless-steel pad clips with the flat-tip screwdriver.
- Note the position of the inner pad wear indicator before removing it.
Step 6: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and use the small fluid extractor if the level is close to overflowing.
- Place an old brake pad against the piston. Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Stop if the piston binds, the rubber boot folds inward, or fluid leaks from the caliper.
- Slow pressure protects the piston seal.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Lift the bracket away from the rotor.
- Keep grease and brake fluid away from all pad and rotor friction surfaces.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- If fitted, use a Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screws.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If it is rusted in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with a rubber mallet. The rotor hat is the raised center section of the rotor.
- Do not strike the wheel studs or the braking surface being retained for inspection.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and New Rotor
- Use the steel brake-parts wire brush to remove rust and scale from the hub face.
- Wipe the hub with brake parts cleaner and disposable shop towels. The rotor must sit completely flat against it.
- Spray both friction surfaces of the new rotor with brake parts cleaner and wipe them dry using disposable shop towels.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Slide the new rotor over the wheel studs with clean, gloved hands.
- If equipped, install the rotor retaining screws with the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver and tighten them to 5.9-8.8 Nm (52-78 in-lbs).
- Do not apply grease to the rotor face or wheel studs.
Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the steel brake-parts wire brush to clean rust from the bracket surfaces beneath the pad clips.
- Install the new upper and lower pad clips by hand.
- Use a gloved fingertip to apply a very thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand, wipe it with disposable shop towels, and apply a thin layer of compatible brake lubricant.
- Reinstall each guide pin into its original position. Confirm that it slides freely and its rubber boot is fully seated.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts evenly to 78.5-98.1 Nm (58-72 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- Position the pad with the wear indicator in the same location as the original inner pad.
- Verify that both pads move smoothly in the clips without excessive looseness.
- Do not put lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor.
Step 14: Reinstall the Brake Caliper
- Remove the caliper hanger hook and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Align the guide pins and start both guide-pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts to 21.6-31.4 Nm (16-23 ft-lbs).
- Repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the opposite front wheel.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheels
- Place each wheel onto the hub and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 107.9-127.5 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Add only fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid if the level is below the correct mark.
- Use disposable shop towels to clean any spilled fluid immediately.

- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. The pedal should remain steady and must not sink toward the floor.
- 🔍 Inspect both front calipers and brake hoses for leaks or incorrect positioning.
- 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- 🛑 Unless the pad manufacturer specifies otherwise, make 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds between stops.
- 🌡️ Avoid holding the brake pedal down while stopped immediately after bedding the pads.
- 🧊 Drive for 10-15 minutes without heavy braking afterward to let the brakes cool.
- 🔧 Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
