- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either front caliper is removed.
- ⚠️ Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
- ⚠️ Avoid breathing brake dust. Do not clean components with compressed air.
- ⚠️ Monitor the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons. Remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Forte on level pavement, select Park or first gear, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- 🚗 Place rubber wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
- 🚗 No infotainment menu, electronic parking-brake service mode, scan tool, or battery disconnection is needed for the front brakes.
- 🚗 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side rear of the engine compartment.
- 🚗 Check the reservoir level. If it is near MAX, use the 100mL plastic fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 🚗 Perform one side at a time so the assembled side remains available as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the reinforced front lifting point or reinforced side pinch weld.
- Place a 2-ton jack stand beneath the reinforced pinch-weld support point. A jack stand is a rigid support that holds the vehicle after lifting.
- Lower the vehicle slowly onto the stand and gently verify that it is stable.
- Repeat on the opposite front side if raising the entire front.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove all five wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat away from your work area.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper faces outward for easier access.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin turns, use the 17mm socket and breaker bar to hold its flats while loosening the 14mm bolt.
- Lift the caliper from the pads. Support it from the suspension spring with the caliper support hook.
- Do not twist, stretch, or disconnect the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips from the bracket.
- Note the position of the old pad’s wear indicator and install the new indicator pad in the same position.
- Photograph the old pad layout before removal.
Step 6: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place an old brake pad against the piston, then use the brake caliper piston compressor to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir. If the fluid approaches the top, remove a small amount with the 100mL plastic fluid syringe.
- Stop if the piston binds, tilts, leaks fluid, or will not retract smoothly. The caliper may require replacement.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts from the steering knuckle.
- Hold the bracket securely because it is heavier than it looks.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- If equipped with rotor retaining screws, use the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver to remove them.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If seized, install two M8 x 1.25 rotor removal bolts into the threaded extraction holes and tighten them evenly with the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
- If needed, strike only the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 16-ounce rubber mallet. Do not hit the studs.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and Bracket
- Use the stainless-steel hand wire brush to remove rust and scale from the hub face.
- Use the stainless-steel hand wire brush to clean the caliper bracket where the new pad-support clips sit.
- Spray brake parts cleaner onto a disposable shop towel and wipe the hub and bracket clean.
- The new rotor must sit completely flat against the hub. Trapped rust can cause brake pulsation.
Step 10: Inspect and Lubricate the Guide Pins
- Pull each guide pin from the bracket by hand and wipe it with disposable shop towels.
- Inspect the rubber boots for splits, swelling, or looseness. Replace damaged boots.
- Apply a thin film of silicone ceramic brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it by hand.
- Confirm both pins slide smoothly and their boots seat fully.
- Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage the rubber boots.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Spray both friction surfaces of the new rotor with brake parts cleaner and wipe them dry using disposable shop towels.
- Slide the rotor onto the wheel studs until it sits flat against the hub.
- If equipped, install the retaining screws with the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Do not touch the cleaned rotor surfaces with greasy gloves.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bracket bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bolts. Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new pad-support clips fully into the cleaned bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of silicone ceramic brake lubricant only where the pad tabs contact the clips.
- Install the inner and outer pads by hand, matching the original wear-indicator position.
- Keep lubricant away from the pad friction material and rotor surfaces.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper support hook and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Make sure the brake hose is not twisted and both guide-pin boots remain seated.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts. Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
- If a guide pin turns, hold its flats with the 17mm socket while using the 14mm socket and torque wrench.
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and procedure to replace the pads and rotor on the opposite front wheel.
- Always replace front brake pads and rotors on both sides.
Step 16: Reinstall the Wheels
- Place each wheel onto the hub and install all five wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower your Forte until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern. Torque to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Use the disposable shop towels to check around both calipers and hoses for brake-fluid leakage.
- Check the reservoir and add only DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid as needed. Do not fill above MAX.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal must remain firm and must not sink toward the floor.
- ✅ Confirm the red brake warning light turns off before moving your Forte.
- ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ✅ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 6-8 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling between stops.
- ✅ Do not come to a complete stop and hold the hot brakes during bedding unless necessary for safety.
- ✅ Avoid hard or repeated emergency-style braking for the first 300-500 km unless needed for safety.
- ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
- ✅ If the pedal remains soft, the vehicle pulls sharply, or grinding continues, stop driving and inspect the installation.
