📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Loosen the cap (leave it sitting on top) so fluid can move when you compress the pistons.
  • Turn the steering wheel to give you more room at the side you’re working on.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and lift the front

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts about 1 turn (do not remove yet).
  • Lift the front with a floor jack at the front jack point, then set the vehicle onto jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel lug nuts with the 21mm socket and take the wheel off.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper (do not remove the hose)

  • Turn the steering so the caliper is easy to reach.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the two caliper slide bolts (back side of the caliper).
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the pads. If it’s tight, use a flat trim/pry tool to gently pry the caliper outward a little.
  • Hang the caliper using a brake caliper hanger hook. (A hanger keeps the brake hose from being stretched.)

Step 3: Remove the old pads and caliper bracket

  • Slide the old pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket, breaker bar, and extension to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the old rotor

  • If your rotor has a retaining screw, remove it using a Torx T30 bit.
  • Pull the rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck, tap around the rotor “hat” with a rubber mallet until it loosens.
  • Use brake cleaner and a wire brush to clean rust off the hub face (where the rotor sits). A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.

Step 5: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove packing oil, then wipe clean.
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub. If equipped, reinstall the retaining screw with a Torx T30 bit (snug only).
  • Apply a very thin film of anti-seize compound to the hub center (not on the rotor braking surface).

Step 6: Service the bracket hardware and reinstall the bracket

  • Remove the old pad clips from the bracket (they snap out). Use a flat trim/pry tool if needed.
  • Clean the bracket “lands” (where the clips sit) with a wire brush, then install the new clips from the hardware kit.
  • Reinstall the caliper bracket and start both bolts by hand.
  • Tighten using a 21mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Compress the caliper piston

  • Before compressing, check the brake fluid level at the reservoir. If it’s near “MAX,” remove a little fluid (so it doesn’t overflow).
  • Place an old pad against the piston face, then use a large C-clamp to slowly press the piston back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly and keep the piston straight. (This makes room for the thicker new pads.)

Step 8: Install the new pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Apply a thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease to pad backing contact points (not on the friction material).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide bolts using a 13mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench: Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the other front side

  • Repeat Steps 1-9 for the other front wheel.
  • Always replace pads and rotors in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal slowly 10-15 times until it feels firm. (This seats the pads against the rotors.)
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal feels normal (it will drop slightly with vacuum assist).
  • Test drive at low speed first and confirm no pulling, grinding, or warning lights.
  • Pad break-in (bedding): make 6-10 medium stops from ~40 mph down to ~10 mph, allowing a little cooling between stops. Avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles.
