- 📱 No infotainment service mode, electronic parking-brake retraction, scan tool, coding, or calibration is required.
- 📸 Take a picture of the original pad clips and wear-indicator positions before disassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the five nuts on each front wheel about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Sonata is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Position the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
- Raise your Sonata and place the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum beneath the reinforced front side pinch-weld support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands, then give it a careful stability check.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lift point.
Step 3: Remove the Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them under the rocker-panel area as an additional precaution.
Step 4: Check the Brake-Fluid Level
- Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
- Check the fluid level before compressing either caliper piston.
- If the reservoir is already at the MAX line, use the brake-fluid extractor to remove a small amount. Keep brake fluid off painted surfaces.
Step 5: Remove the First Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to expose the back of the caliper.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Support it from the suspension spring with the bungee cord rated 25 pounds minimum.
- Do not twist, stretch, or kink the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad clips.
- Note which pad carries the metal wear indicator so the new pad can be installed in the same position.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Hold the bracket securely because it is heavier than it looks.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Use the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver to loosen the rotor-retaining screw. An impact screwdriver turns the bit when its handle is struck.
- If necessary, strike the impact screwdriver squarely with the ball-peen hammer 16-ounce.
- Pull the rotor from the hub. If rust holds it in place, tap only the rotor hat with the ball-peen hammer 16-ounce while rotating the rotor.
- Do not strike the wheel studs or hub-bearing center.
Step 9: Clean and Inspect the Hub
- Use the nylon brake-caliper brush and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to remove rust and dirt from the hub face.
- Make sure the new rotor can sit completely flat against the hub. Debris trapped here can cause brake pulsation.
- Inspect the caliper, hose, piston boot, and guide-pin boots. Replace damaged components before continuing.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both friction faces of the new rotor thoroughly with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and wipe them with a clean disposable towel.
- Place the rotor squarely over the wheel studs.
- Install the retaining screw with the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver. Torque to 4.9-5.9 Nm (43-52 in-lbs).
- Do not apply lubricant between the rotor and hub.
Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the nylon brake-caliper brush to clean the pad-support areas on the bracket.
- Install the new stainless-steel pad hardware by hand. Confirm every clip is fully seated.
- Pull each guide pin out by hand, one at a time. A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that lets the caliper move as the brakes apply.
- Wipe the pin clean and apply a thin coat of silicone-based brake lubricant. Reinstall it into its original bore without trapping air in the rubber boot.
- Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage brake rubber.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts. Torque to 78.5-98.1 Nm (58-72 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place the old inner pad against the piston to spread the force evenly.
- Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and completely into the caliper.
- Watch the reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake-fluid extractor if the fluid approaches the top.
- Stop if the piston is crooked, seized, or leaking.
Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a very thin film of silicone-based brake lubricant only where the pad ears contact the stainless-steel clips.
- Install the inner and outer pads by hand with the friction material facing the rotor.
- Place the wear-indicator pad in the same position as the original pad.
- Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the support cord and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts. Torque to 21.6-31.4 Nm (16-23 ft-lbs).
- Confirm the guide-pin boots are seated and not twisted.
Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the opposite front brake using the same listed tools.
- Compare both completed sides before installing the wheels.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all five nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise your Sonata slightly with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum, remove the stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern. Torque to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- 🦶 With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm. Do not move your Sonata before the pedal is firm.
- 💧 Check the reservoir and adjust it to the MAX line only with fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. Do not overfill it.
- 🔍 Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for 30 seconds. Check for sinking pedal feel, leaks, warning lights, or unusual noises.
- 🚗 In a safe area, test the brakes at walking speed before entering traffic.
- 🔥 Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Do not come to a complete stop during each cycle, and allow the brakes to cool afterward.
- 🛑 Avoid panic stops and prolonged pedal holding for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
- 🔩 Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-100 km.
- ⚠️ Do not drive if the pedal remains soft, fluid leaks, the vehicle pulls strongly, or a brake warning light stays on.
