🔧 Impala - Front Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and both front rotors on your Impala. Replacing both sides together provides even braking and helps prevent pulling, vibration, and uneven wear.

Assumption: The factory front brake calipers are installed and undamaged.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support your Impala with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Brake dust and brake cleaner can irritate your eyes and skin.
  • Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • Keep grease, brake cleaner residue, and dirty hands away from pad and rotor friction surfaces.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons. Remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.
  • Battery disconnection and electronic service mode are not required for the front brakes.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Impala on firm, level ground. Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • Place rubber wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is completely full, remove a small amount using an appropriate fluid extractor before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • Brake fluid damages paint. Immediately rinse away any spill with plenty of clean water.
  • No infotainment menu, scan-tool command, battery disconnection, or electronic parking-brake procedure is needed for this front brake repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn. Do not remove them yet.
  • Keep the rubber wheel chocks firmly positioned behind the rear tires.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front cradle.
  • Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points behind the front wheels.
  • Lower the floor jack slowly until the vehicle rests securely on both jack stands. Leave the jack lightly touching the lifting point as a backup.
  • Use both gloved hands to gently push the body and verify that it is stable before continuing.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
  • Remove each wheel with both gloved hands and place it flat away from the work area.
  • Complete one brake assembly at a time so the assembled side remains available as a reference.

Step 4: Create Space for the New Pads

  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver through the caliper inspection opening to gently push the old inner pad toward the piston. This retracts the piston slightly.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while pushing. Stop and remove excess fluid if the level approaches the reservoir opening.
  • Slow pressure protects the piston and reservoir.

Step 5: Remove the Brake Caliper

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket with both gloved hands.
  • Support the caliper with the brake caliper hanger attached to the suspension spring. A caliper hanger is a rigid hook that carries the caliper without stressing its hose.
  • Do not twist, stretch, or kink the brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Compress the Piston

  • Remove the inner and outer pads from the bracket using the large flat-blade screwdriver if they are tight.
  • Place an old pad against the caliper piston, then use the 6-inch C-clamp or disc-brake piston compressor to press the piston slowly and completely into the caliper bore.
  • A piston compressor is a tool that pushes the caliper piston straight back without damaging it.
  • Inspect the rubber piston boot using the safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Stop if it is torn, leaking, or pushed out of position.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket with both gloved hands and set it in the drain pan.
  • Remove the old stainless-steel abutment clips using the large flat-blade screwdriver. Abutment clips are the metal guides on which the pads slide.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • If fitted, use the Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
  • Pull the rotor straight off using both gloved hands.
  • If rust holds it in place, strike only the rotor hat between the wheel studs using the 16-ounce dead-blow hammer. Do not hit the studs or hub bearing.

Step 9: Clean the Hub and New Rotor

  • Use the small wire brush to remove rust and debris from the hub face, especially around the wheel studs and center pilot.
  • Use aerosol brake cleaner and the drain pan to wash debris from the hub area. Allow it to dry fully.
  • Use aerosol brake cleaner and nitrile gloves to clean both friction faces of the new rotor until the protective shipping coating is gone.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.

Step 10: Install the New Rotor

  • Install the new rotor squarely over the wheel studs using both gloved hands.
  • If equipped, install the retaining screw using the Torx T30 bit socket and torque wrench. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • If no retaining screw is present, hold the rotor against the hub temporarily using one wheel nut installed backward by hand.

Step 11: Service and Install the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the small wire brush to clean rust from the bracket surfaces beneath the abutment clips.
  • Install the new abutment clips using gloved fingers and the large flat-blade screwdriver where necessary.
  • Remove each guide pin by hand, wipe it clean, and apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant using a gloved fingertip.
  • Reinstall each guide pin by hand into its original bore. Confirm both pins slide smoothly and their rubber boots are seated.
  • Position the bracket and start both bracket bolts by hand.
  • Use the 18mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts. Torque to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears using a gloved fingertip. The pad ears are the small tabs that contact the abutment clips.
  • Keep lubricant completely off the rotor and pad friction material.
  • Fit the inner and outer pads into the bracket using both gloved hands. The pads must slide without binding.
  • Use aerosol brake cleaner if any lubricant touches a rotor friction surface.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the caliper from the brake caliper hanger using both gloved hands and place it over the new pads.
  • Do not force the caliper. Recheck that the piston is fully compressed if it does not fit.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts. Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Check with gloved hands that the brake hose is not twisted and the guide-pin boots are properly seated.

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the opposite front brake.
  • Use the 14mm, 18mm, and Torx T30 tools at the same locations, and apply the same torque specifications.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove any temporary backward wheel nut using the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
  • Install each wheel using both gloved hands, then start every wheel nut by hand.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Raise the vehicle slightly using the 2-ton floor jack, remove both 2-ton jack stands, and lower the vehicle carefully.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern. Torque to 140 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm. This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Adjust only with the correct DOT 3 brake fluid if the level is below the marked range.
  • Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain firm and must not slowly sink.
  • Inspect both front calipers and hoses for leakage.
  • Perform a cautious test at walking speed before entering traffic. Confirm the vehicle stops straight and no warning light remains on.
  • Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Avoid coming to a complete stop while the brakes are very hot, then drive for 10 minutes with minimal braking to cool them.
  • Avoid panic stops and prolonged brake-pedal holding for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque to 140 Nm (100 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
