🔧 Escape - Front Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Escape. Worn pads or warped rotors can cause grinding, squealing, vibration, longer stopping distance, or steering wheel shake while braking.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface only. Never rely on a jack by itself.
  • ⚠️ Always support your Escape with jack stands. Jack stands are metal supports that hold the vehicle safely after lifting.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it with compressed air; use brake cleaner instead.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid damages paint. Wipe spills immediately with water.
  • ⚠️ Front brakes get very hot after driving. Let them cool before starting.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this front brake job.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake firmly.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is very full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • Only replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs. Do both front wheels during the same repair.
  • Take phone photos before disassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack at the front subframe lifting point to raise the front of your Escape.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points on both sides.
  • Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.
  • Never work under a jack only.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Caliper Spring Clip

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the outer spring clip off the front brake caliper.
  • The caliper is the metal clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
  • Hold the clip with one hand while prying so it does not fly off.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts

  • Remove the small rubber caps from the back of the caliper guide pins by hand.
  • Use a 7mm hex socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Guide pins are smooth bolts that let the caliper slide evenly as the brakes wear.

Step 6: Remove and Support the Caliper

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently wiggle the caliper loose from the rotor.
  • Lift the caliper off the brake pads and rotor.
  • Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the strut spring.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
  • The brake hose is easily damaged.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the outer and inner brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver only if the pads are stuck.
  • Notice the position of any wear indicator tabs before removal.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • The caliper bracket is the heavy metal frame that holds the brake pads.
  • Remove the bracket and set it aside.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the brake rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
  • If it is stuck, use a rubber mallet to tap the rotor between the wheel studs until it loosens.
  • Do not strike the wheel studs directly.

Step 10: Clean the Hub Surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
  • The hub face must be flat and clean so the new rotor does not wobble.
  • Rust here can cause brake vibration.

Step 11: Install the New Rotor

  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean both sides of the new rotor.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the wheel hub by hand.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.

Step 12: Prepare the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a wire brush to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
  • Install the new front brake hardware kit clips by hand.
  • Apply a thin coat of brake lubricant to the pad contact areas of the clips.
  • Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before compressing the piston.
  • Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the caliper.
  • The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
  • Compress it slowly so brake fluid can return to the reservoir without overflowing.

Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Place the new brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
  • Apply a thin coat of brake lubricant only to the pad ears where they touch the hardware clips.
  • Do not lubricate the front face of the brake pads.

Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and slide the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start both guide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 7mm hex socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the guide pin bolts.
  • Use a 7mm hex socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the guide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
  • Reinstall the rubber guide pin caps by hand.

Step 17: Reinstall the Caliper Spring Clip

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully snap the outer spring clip back into place.
  • Make sure it is fully seated in the caliper holes.

Step 18: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 17 on the other front wheel.
  • Use the same tools and the same torque specifications.
  • Always replace both front rotors and both front pad sets together.

Step 19: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install both front wheels by hand.
  • Start all lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 20: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Escape until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs)

Step 21: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
  • The pedal will feel soft at first, then become firm.
  • Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
  • ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and normal.
  • ✅ Check around both front calipers for fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-40 mph, allowing the brakes to cool briefly between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
