🔧 Front Brakes and Rotors - Replacement

On your Sierra, the front brake pads and rotors are a wear item and should be replaced together to restore stopping power and prevent noise or vibration. This job is straightforward, but the caliper and bracket are heavy, so support them carefully while you work.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface with the parking brake set and the transmission in Park.
  • Use jack stands under the frame. Do not rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Support the caliper with wire or a bungee cord so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • If the pads are pushed back, the brake fluid level may rise. Watch the master cylinder reservoir.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket

  • 18mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Caliper piston compression tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord or mechanic's wire

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • Raise the front and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Remove both front wheels before starting the brake work.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front wheels

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
  • Take off both front wheels and set them aside.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee cord or mechanic's wire.
  • Never let it hang by the hose.

Step 3: Remove the brake pads

  • Slide the old pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and hardware if they are being replaced.
  • Clean the bracket contact points with a wire brush and brake cleaner.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • Torque on install: 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver to back off the adjustment access if needed and tap the rotor hat area lightly.
  • Remove the rotor from the hub.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush so the new rotor sits flat.
  • A clean hub prevents brake pulsation.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe it clean.
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • If equipped, install the rotor retaining screw and snug it lightly.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Install the bracket with the 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 221 Nm (163 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Use a caliper piston compression tool (specialty) to push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
  • Open the cap loosely if fluid rises.

Step 9: Install the new pads

  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad ears and contact points only.
  • Install the new pad hardware and new pads into the bracket.
  • Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Install the guide pin bolts using the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install both front wheels and hand-start the lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck and use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Pump the brake pedal

  • Press the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the brake pedal before driving.
  • Do a slow test drive in a safe area.
  • Listen for rubbing or clicking noises.
  • Bed the brakes in with several moderate stops from low speed.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the first drive.
