📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on firm, level ground. Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • 🔍 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. Use a small fluid transfer syringe to remove some fluid if it is near the MAX line, because retracting the pistons raises the level.
  • 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan-tool command, battery registration, or electronic parking-brake retraction is required.
  • 🔩 Perform one side at a time so the assembled side remains available as a reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut approximately one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the specified front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
  • Place 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side lifting points behind the front wheels.
  • Lower your Explorer carefully onto the stands, then gently push the body to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and slide them beneath the rocker-panel area as an added precaution.

Step 4: Create Clearance at the Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on the side being serviced points outward.
  • Use safety glasses, an N95 respirator, aerosol brake cleaner, and a drain pan to wet and remove loose brake dust.
  • Use a large flat-blade screwdriver between the old inner pad and rotor to push the caliper pistons inward slightly.
  • Apply slow, steady pressure. Watch the reservoir and remove excess fluid with the small fluid transfer syringe if necessary.

Step 5: Remove the Brake Caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that lets the caliper move as the brakes are applied.
  • Support the caliper with a brake-caliper hanger hook. Do not twist or stretch the brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Use your gloved hands to slide the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a large flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
  • Note the position of any wear indicator before discarding the old pads.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Support the bracket while removing the final bolt.
  • Keep grease and dirty tools away from the exposed brake-hose fitting.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Remove and discard any factory retaining push nuts fitted over the wheel studs using a large flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If it is rusted in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with a rubber mallet. Do not strike the studs or wheel-bearing hub.

Step 9: Clean the Hub and New Rotor

  • Use a wire brake-cleaning brush to remove rust and scale from the hub face.
  • The new rotor must sit completely flat against the hub. Remaining rust can cause pedal pulsation.
  • Use aerosol brake cleaner and a clean disposable towel to clean both friction faces of the new rotor.
  • Install the new rotor over the wheel studs. Install new retaining push nuts if supplied.
  • A wheel nut can temporarily hold the rotor.

Step 10: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire brake-cleaning brush and aerosol brake cleaner to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the pad clips.
  • Remove each guide pin by hand, wipe it clean, and inspect its rubber boot for tears.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it into its original bore.
  • Confirm both guide pins slide freely and their rubber boots are fully seated.
  • Install the new stainless-steel pad clips by hand.
  • Apply only a thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the clips.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Use your gloved hands to install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
  • Match the wear-indicator position to the original pad arrangement.
  • Confirm the pads slide in the clips without binding.

Step 13: Retract the Caliper Pistons

  • Place an old brake pad across both pistons.
  • Use a dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons slowly and evenly into the caliper. This specialty tool presses both pistons back without damaging them.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and prevent it from overflowing.
  • Stop and inspect the caliper if either piston binds or the rubber dust boot folds outward.

Step 14: Reinstall the Brake Caliper

  • Remove the brake-caliper hanger hook and lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Make sure the brake hose is not twisted.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts to 72 Nm (53 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the other front wheel.
  • Compare both completed sides and verify that all clips, boots, bolts, and hoses are correctly positioned.

Step 16: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start every wheel nut by hand.
  • Use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift your Explorer slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Before moving your Explorer, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. The first few presses may travel close to the floor.
  • 🧪 Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only as needed, without exceeding the MAX line.
  • 🔍 Inspect around both front calipers for leaks and confirm that both brake hoses remain untwisted.
  • 🚨 Do not drive if the pedal remains soft, sinks under steady pressure, or a brake warning light stays illuminated.
  • 🚗 Perform a cautious low-speed brake test in a traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • 🌡️ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing about 30 seconds between stops. Do not come to a complete stop with hot brakes unless traffic requires it.
  • ❄️ Drive for several minutes afterward with minimal braking so the brakes can cool evenly.
  • 🔧 Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
