📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tahoe on firm, level ground. Shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- 🔍 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with the brake fluid extraction syringe so it will not overflow when the pistons are compressed.
- 🧼 Work on one side at a time so the assembled side remains available as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Tahoe is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the front frame crossmember to raise your Tahoe.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front frame rails, then lower the vehicle carefully onto the stands.
- Give the body a gentle push to verify that it is stable before removing either wheel.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the frame as an added precaution.
Step 4: Compress the Caliper Pistons Slightly
- Use the large flat-blade screwdriver between the old inner pad and rotor to push the caliper outward slightly.
- This creates clearance for caliper removal. Do not damage the rubber piston boots.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and remove excess fluid with the extraction syringe if it approaches the top.
Step 5: Remove and Support the Caliper
- Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with the caliper hanger.
- Never allow the caliper to hang from its flexible brake hose.
- A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that lets the caliper move evenly as the brakes operate.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use the large flat-blade screwdriver to remove the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Remove the stainless pad clips by hand or with the screwdriver.
- Note the position of any wear indicator before discarding the old pads.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the bracket and place it on a clean work surface.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Use the Torx T30 bit socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If rust holds it in place, use the 24-ounce rubber mallet to strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs. Do not strike the studs.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and New Rotor
- Use the small wire brush to remove rust and debris from the hub face.
- The rotor must sit completely flat against the hub. Rust trapped here can cause brake pulsation.
- Use brake cleaner and disposable shop towels to clean both friction surfaces of the new rotor.
- Clean rotors prevent contaminated new pads.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Slide the new rotor over the wheel studs and seat it flush against the hub.
- Install the retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket and torque wrench. Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the small wire brush to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the stainless pad clips.
- Install the new pad clips by hand.
- Apply a thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the clips. Keep lubricant off the rotor and pad friction material.
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand. Wipe it clean with disposable shop towels, apply a thin coat of silicone brake lubricant, and reinstall it.
- Replace any torn boot or corroded guide pin before continuing.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bracket bolts by hand.
- Use the 18mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both bolts. Torque to 230 Nm (170 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads
- Press the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- Confirm that both pads slide smoothly in the clips without excessive looseness.
- Keep greasy fingers and lubricant away from the pad friction surfaces.
Step 14: Compress Both Caliper Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both pistons to distribute pressure evenly.
- Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons fully and slowly into the caliper.
- A caliper compression tool presses the pistons back evenly without twisting or damaging them.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons. Use the extraction syringe if the fluid approaches the top.
- If either piston binds or the rubber boot tears, stop and repair or replace the caliper.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 18mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts. Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front brake assembly.
- Both rotors and all front pads must be replaced together.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your Tahoe slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires contact the ground.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern. Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- 🦶 Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm. This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
- 🧴 Check the reservoir and adjust to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if needed. Do not overfill it.
- 🔍 Start your Tahoe and hold firm brake-pedal pressure for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady, and no fluid should leak around either caliper or hose.
- 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe area before entering normal traffic.
- 🔥 Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Do not come to a complete stop between applications, then drive for 10 minutes with minimal braking to cool them.
- 🛑 Avoid hard braking and holding the pedal down after a hard stop for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
- 🔧 Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
