📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sierra 1500 on firm, level ground. Shift into Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place the wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
- Use a brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount if the reservoir is near the MAX line. This prevents overflow when the caliper pistons are compressed.
- No infotainment menu, electronic parking-brake service mode, scan tool, or battery disconnection is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tires are supporting the truck.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Position the 3-ton floor jack under the front frame crossmember and raise the front of your Sierra 1500.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced frame rails behind the front wheels.
- Lower the truck carefully onto the stands. Gently push the body to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the crossmember.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Use a flashlight and safety glasses to inspect the brake hoses, calipers, and surrounding area for fluid leaks or damage.
- Check the old pads for uneven wear. One pad being much thinner can indicate a seized guide pin or caliper.
- A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that allows the caliper to center itself over the rotor.
Step 5: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the old inner pad and rotor to create a small amount of clearance.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while pushing the pistons back. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
- Do not force a piston that will not move smoothly. A seized caliper must be replaced.
Step 6: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Use a 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin rotates, hold it with an 18mm combination wrench while loosening the bolt with the 19mm socket.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with a brake caliper hanger.
- Do not twist, stretch, or disconnect the brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Remove the stainless-steel pad clips with the flat-blade screwdriver.
- Use the nylon cleaning brush and brake cleaner over a drain pan to clean the bracket contact areas.
Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Support the bracket as the final bolt is removed.
- Discard the old bracket bolts if replacement bolts are supplied or specified as single-use.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Use a Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If rust has seized it, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with a dead-blow hammer. Do not strike the studs.
Step 10: Clean the Wheel Hub
- Use the wire hub-cleaning brush to remove rust from the hub face and center pilot.
- Use brake cleaner and clean shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
- The new rotor must sit completely flat against the hub. Remaining rust can cause pedal pulsation.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner and clean shop towels to remove protective oil from both friction surfaces of the new rotor.
- Place the rotor fully onto the hub without touching its cleaned friction surfaces with greasy gloves.
- Install the retaining screw using the Torx T30 bit socket and inch-pound torque wrench.
- Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the cleaned bracket over the new rotor.
- Apply medium-strength threadlocker to clean replacement bracket-bolt threads unless the new bolts already have locking compound.
- Start both bolts by hand, then tighten them with the 21mm socket.
- Use the 1/2-inch torque wrench and 21mm socket to torque to 230 Nm (170 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Service the Guide Pins and Install Hardware
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand and wipe it clean with a shop towel.
- Inspect the boots for tears and confirm both pins slide freely.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to each pin, then reinstall it without trapping air in the boot.
- Press the new stainless-steel pad clips into the bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin coat of silicone brake lubricant to the pad-contact surfaces of the clips.
- Do not place lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.
Step 14: Fully Compress Both Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- A caliper compression tool presses the pistons back without tilting or damaging them.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and remove excess fluid with the brake-fluid syringe if necessary.
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
- Place any wear-indicator tab in the same position as on the original pad.
- Confirm both pads slide smoothly in the clips without excessive looseness.
Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Do not force the caliper or twist its hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 19mm socket and torque wrench, holding the pins with the 18mm combination wrench if needed.
- Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same tools and procedure to replace the pads and rotor on the other front wheel.
- Before installing the wheels, use brake cleaner and clean shop towels to remove any fingerprints or lubricant from both rotors.
Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Raise your Sierra 1500 slightly with the 3-ton floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 19: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- Before shifting out of Park, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Check the reservoir and adjust to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
- Do not drive if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.

- ✅ Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal remains firm under steady pressure.
- ✅ Inspect around both calipers and brake hoses for fluid leaks.
- ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Avoid coming to a complete stop between applications.
