🔧 Murano - Engine Mount Replacement

Your Murano uses separate right engine, left transmission, front torque, and rear torque mounts. Replace only one mount at a time while supporting the powertrain; removing multiple mounts can let the engine and CVT shift suddenly.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-8 hours for all mounts

Assumption: Procedures for both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are identified because drive type was not provided.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Support the engine with an engine support bar or a floor jack under a wide wooden block; never place a jack directly against the aluminum oil pan.
  • ⚠️ Do not lift the engine more than necessary. Excessive movement can damage CV axles, wiring, hoses, exhaust joints, and the CVT.
  • ⚠️ Replace one mount at a time and install its fasteners before loosening another mount.
  • ⚠️ The rear mount is close to the exhaust. Let the vehicle cool completely before starting.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the starter, wiring harness, or left transmission mount.
  • ⚠️ Mount fasteners carry the powertrain’s weight. Final torque must match the current Nissan service specification for the exact mount and FWD/AWD configuration.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Right engine mount - Qty: 1 as needed
  • Left transmission mount - Qty: 1 as needed
  • Front torque mount - Qty: 1 as needed
  • Rear torque mount - Qty: 1 as needed
  • Engine-mount self-locking nuts and specified one-time-use bolts - Qty: As required
  • Penetrating lubricant - Qty: 1

Do not order all four mounts solely because one has failed. Inspect each mount for torn rubber, leaking hydraulic fluid, separation, or excessive movement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Murano on level, solid ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and chock both rear wheels.
  • 📋 Open the hood before disconnecting power. No infotainment service mode, battery registration, or programming is required.
  • 📋 Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut. Remove the terminal and isolate it from the battery for at least three minutes.
  • 📋 An engine support bar spans the upper body structure and holds the engine from above. This is safer than placing the engine’s full weight on the oil pan.
  • 📋 Obtain the current Nissan Electronic Service Manual torque table for the exact mount and FWD/AWD configuration. Mount fasteners vary by position, and unverified torque values should not be used.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Place rubber wheel chocks firmly against both sides of the rear tires.
  • Use the floor jack at the front-center lifting point, then lower your Murano onto jack stands at both front side support points.
  • Gently shake the body to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
  • Use a trim-clip removal tool, flat-blade screwdriver, and 10mm socket to remove the lower engine splash shield.

Step 2: Support the powertrain

  • Install the engine support bar across the approved upper body support areas and connect it to the engine lifting eye.
  • Tighten the support bar only until it carries the engine’s weight. Do not raise the engine yet.
  • If additional control is needed, position the floor jack and wooden support block beneath a broad reinforced area of the oil pan. Apply only light contact pressure.
  • Mark every bracket position before loosening it.

Step 3: Inspect and identify the failed mount

  • Use the LED work light to inspect the right mount beside the engine, the left mount beside the CVT, and the front and rear torque mounts below the powertrain.
  • A torque mount limits engine rocking during acceleration and braking.
  • Look for separated or cracked rubber, metal-to-metal contact, collapsed height, or oily fluid leaking from a hydraulic mount.
  • Use a paint marker to outline each mount bracket before removal. This helps preserve powertrain alignment.

Step 4: Replace the right engine mount

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim-clip removal tool to remove any intake duct, reservoir bracket, or harness retainer blocking access. Move components aside without disconnecting fluid hoses.
  • Use the appropriate 14-19mm socket, extension, and breaker bar to loosen the mount-to-engine bracket fasteners and body-side fasteners. Do not remove all fasteners until the engine is fully supported.
  • Adjust the engine support bar slightly until the bolts move freely by hand. Never force a bolt while the engine’s weight is pinching it.
  • Remove the mount and compare its dimensions and locating tabs with the replacement part.
  • Place the new mount against the paint marks. Start every bolt and nut by hand for at least three full turns.
  • Lower the support slightly so the powertrain settles naturally into the mount without being pulled sideways.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten each fastener in the sequence and to the value listed under Engine Mechanical > Engine Assembly > Removal and Installation > Tightening Torque in the current Nissan service information.

Step 5: Replace the left transmission mount

  • Confirm the engine support bar is carrying both the engine and CVT before loosening this mount.
  • Use a 10mm socket, trim-clip removal tool, and needle-nose pliers to remove obstructing air-intake pieces, battery-area retainers, and harness clips as required.
  • Use the appropriate 14-19mm socket, extension, and breaker bar to loosen the mount bracket and body fasteners.
  • Adjust the support bar only enough to unload the fasteners, then remove the mount.
  • Align the replacement mount with the paint marks. Start all bolts and nuts by hand.
  • Let the powertrain settle into its natural position before final tightening.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten each fastener in the specified sequence and to the current Nissan service value. Do not use the right-mount torque for the left mount.

Step 6: Replace the front torque mount

  • Work from below with your Murano resting securely on jack stands.
  • Use the appropriate 14-19mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front mount through-bolt and bracket fasteners.
  • Use the floor jack and wooden support block to move the powertrain only a few millimetres if the through-bolt binds.
  • Remove the mount, transfer any separate bracket in the same orientation, and install the replacement mount.
  • Start all fasteners by hand. Do not tighten the bracket while the mount is twisted.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten the bracket fasteners and through-bolt to their separate current Nissan service values.

Step 7: Replace the rear torque mount

  • Confirm the exhaust is completely cool. Use the LED work light to locate the rear mount above the rear edge of the front subframe.
  • On AWD models, inspect clearance around the transfer assembly and propeller shaft. Do not pry against either component.
  • Use the appropriate 14-19mm socket, extensions, and breaker bar to remove the rear mount through-bolt and bracket fasteners.
  • If exhaust or driveline removal is required for access, stop and use the applicable Nissan service procedure. These components require additional gaskets, alignment checks, and configuration-specific torque values.
  • Install the new rear mount in the same orientation. Start all fasteners by hand and allow the powertrain to settle.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten each fastener to its specific current Nissan service value.

Step 8: Reassemble the vehicle

  • Check that every mount fastener has been marked after torquing. A paint mark provides a simple visual confirmation.
  • Release and remove the engine support bar. Remove the floor jack and wooden support block from beneath the engine.
  • Use the 10mm socket, trim-clip removal tool, and needle-nose pliers to reinstall all intake parts, brackets, harness clips, and splash shields.
  • Use the floor jack to lift your Murano clear of the jack stands, remove the stands, and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket and tighten it securely without overtightening the small terminal clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ With the hood open and parking brake applied, start the engine and listen for knocking or metal contact.
  • ✅ Hold the brake pedal firmly and shift slowly through Reverse, Neutral, and Drive. Engine movement should be controlled without a heavy clunk.
  • ✅ Stop immediately if the engine shifts sharply, a mount twists, or a bracket contacts the body.
  • ✅ Take a short, low-speed road test. Check for vibration at idle and clunks during gentle acceleration and braking.
  • ✅ Reinspect all mount positions, wiring, hoses, intake ducts, splash shields, and the engine-support lifting eye area.
  • ✅ The power windows may need initialization after battery disconnection. Fully close each window and hold its switch upward for several seconds.
