🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces both front low-beam headlight bulbs on your Tacoma. Replacing both sides together keeps the light color and brightness even, and it helps avoid having the other old bulb fail soon after.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulb. Oil from your fingers can make it burn out early.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition off and the key away from the vehicle while working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulbs H11 halogen - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch fully off.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before opening the new bulb package.
  • 🔎 Identify the low-beam bulb at the rear of each headlight housing. It is the bulb closer to the outer side of the headlamp assembly.
  • 📌 A bulb connector is the plastic electrical plug attached to the back of the bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Use your hand to move the safety latch under the front edge of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlight housing.

Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Low-Beam Bulb

  • Use the flashlight to find the round rear of the low-beam bulb in the headlight housing.
  • The H11 low-beam bulb has a plastic connector plugged into the back of it.
  • Take a photo before unplugging.

Step 3: Unplug the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the release tab on the connector.
  • Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab while pulling the connector back.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the Driver-Side Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to grip the plastic base of the bulb.
  • Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • No fasteners are used here, so there is no torque specification for removal.

Step 5: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to remove one new H11 low-beam headlight bulb from the package.
  • Hold the bulb only by the plastic base.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, use a clean microfiber towel to wipe it clean.
  • Line up the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing.
  • Push the bulb straight in, then turn it clockwise until it locks firmly.
  • Do not force it. If it does not seat flat, remove it and realign the tabs.

Step 6: Reconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your hand to push the connector straight onto the new bulb.
  • Listen or feel for the connector click into place.
  • Lightly tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is locked.

Step 7: Replace the Passenger-Side Low-Beam Bulb

  • Use the flashlight to locate the passenger-side low-beam bulb behind the headlight housing.
  • Use your fingers to press the connector release tab and unplug the connector.
  • If needed, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently help release the connector tab.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out.
  • Install the second new H11 low-beam headlight bulb by lining up the tabs, pushing it in, and turning clockwise until locked.
  • Use your hand to reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Test the Headlights

  • Use your hand to turn the headlight switch on.
  • Stand in front of your Tacoma and confirm both low beams work.
  • Switch the headlights off after testing.
  • If one side does not work, use your hand to check that the connector is fully clicked onto the bulb.

Step 9: Check Bulb Seating

  • Use the flashlight to inspect the back of each headlight housing.
  • Make sure each bulb sits flat and is fully locked.
  • A crooked bulb can cause poor beam pattern or moisture entry.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn on the low beams at night or in front of a wall to verify both beams are even.
  • ✅ If the beam pattern looks much higher or lower on one side, recheck that the bulb is seated correctly.
  • ✅ No scan tool, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
  • ✅ Dispose of the old halogen bulbs safely. Do not crush or break them.
