🔧 Traverse - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replace both headlight bulbs together. Your Traverse uses serviceable D5S 25-watt HID bulbs, not the D3S bulbs that may appear elsewhere in the lighting aisle. HID means high-intensity discharge, a bright lamp operated by a high-voltage electronic unit. parts.chevrolet.com
Access is from behind each headlamp in the engine compartment. The job is straightforward, but the HID system deserves respect because it can produce dangerous voltage.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚡ Switch the exterior lights completely off before opening the hood.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least five minutes before touching either HID bulb or connector.
- 🧤 Never touch the glass portion of a new bulb. Skin oil creates a hot spot that can shorten bulb life.
- 🌡️ Let the lamps cool completely. A recently operating HID bulb gets extremely hot.
- 💡 Never power an HID bulb while it is removed from the headlamp housing.
- 🚫 Don’t probe the bulb connector with a test light or multimeter.
- 🛡️ Wear gloves and safety glasses because HID bulbs contain pressurized glass.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- D5S 25-watt HID headlight bulbs - Qty: 2 - Replace in pairs
Important: Match the D5S marking on the removed bulb before installing the replacements. Don’t substitute D3S or a generic LED conversion. GM lists D5S as the correct bulb type for this Traverse application. parts.chevrolet.com
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Traverse on level ground, shift into Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Switch the ignition off, remove the key or move the remote away from the vehicle, and turn the headlight control off.
- ⏳ Allow both headlamps to cool for at least 10 minutes.
- 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable before opening either headlamp.
- 📦 Compare the replacement bulbs before installation. Their base, connector, wattage, and locating tabs must match.
- 📱 Take a quick photo of each connector before removal. Cheap insurance beats expensive confusion.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp from the negative terminal and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least five minutes before handling the HID system.
Step 2: Create Working Room
- Inspect the area directly behind the first headlamp.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool only if an intake duct or plastic cover blocks hand access.
- Release plastic retainers gently and place them somewhere safe.
- Do not remove the complete headlamp assembly unless rear access is genuinely obstructed.
Step 3: Remove the Rear Headlamp Cover
- Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Locate the round access cover on the rear of the headlamp housing.
- Turn the cover counterclockwise by hand and pull it away.
- Inspect its rubber seal for cuts, flattening, or dirt.
- Keep dust out of the open housing.
Step 4: Disconnect the Old Bulb
- Identify the electrical connector attached to the bulb base.
- Press the connector release and pull on the connector body, not the wires.
- Note the position of the bulb and its locating tabs before turning anything.
Step 5: Remove the Old HID Bulb
- Turn the bulb base counterclockwise until it releases from the headlamp.
- Pull the bulb straight rearward without striking its glass against the housing.
- Place it in the new bulb’s protective packaging for safe disposal.
- Do not dismantle the ballast or igniter, which are the HID system’s high-voltage electronics.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Hold the new bulb only by its base while wearing clean nitrile gloves.
- If the glass is accidentally touched, wipe it carefully with the clean microfiber cloth and suitable bulb-safe alcohol, then let it dry completely.
- Align the locating tabs with the matching slots inside the headlamp.
- Insert the bulb straight into position and turn it clockwise until fully locked.
- Do not force it. A correctly aligned bulb seats with light hand pressure.
Step 7: Reconnect and Seal the Headlamp
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until its lock engages.
- Check that no wiring is pinched against the cover opening.
- Clean the access-cover seal with the microfiber cloth.
- Install the cover and turn it clockwise until fully seated.
- A loose cover allows moisture into the lamp, and headlights make terrible aquariums.
Step 8: Replace the Opposite Bulb
- Repeat Steps 2 through 7 on the other headlamp.
- Keep the same bulb brand and specification on both sides for equal color and brightness.
- Reinstall any intake duct, cover, or plastic retainers removed for access using the plastic trim removal tool.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative terminal clamp completely onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp securely.
- Do not overtighten or crush the terminal. The clamp must not rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 💡 Start your Traverse and switch on the low beams.
- 👀 Confirm that both bulbs ignite promptly and produce similar color and brightness.
- 🔄 Test the high-beam function because the headlamp shutter system must operate correctly.
- 🧱 Park approximately 25 feet from a level wall and compare the beam pattern. One bulb sitting crooked usually creates a scattered or unusually high beam.
- 💧 Check both rear access covers again. They must be fully locked to prevent condensation.
- ⚠️ If one new bulb remains dark, turn the lights off immediately. Recheck the connector and bulb seating only after disconnecting the battery and waiting five minutes.
- ♻️ Return the old HID bulbs to an automotive bulb or hazardous-waste recycling location. Don’t place them loose in household trash.
