🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a 21mm socket to loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly while the tire is still on the ground.
- Use the floor jack under the front frame crossmember to raise your Tacoma.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails.
- Lower your Tacoma gently onto the jack stands.
- Use the floor jack lightly under the lower control arm to support the suspension.
- Use a 21mm socket to remove the lug nuts and wheel.
Step 2: Free the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the brake hose bracket bolt from the steering knuckle or control arm area.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove ABS wire bracket bolts if equipped.

Step 7: Install the New Lower Ball Joint Assembly
- Position the new lower ball joint assembly onto the lower control arm.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to tighten the lower ball joint-to-lower control arm fasteners.
- Tighten the lower ball joint mounting fasteners to Torque to 160 Nm (118 ft-lbs).
- Start bolts by hand every time.
Step 8: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the ball joint gently into place.
- Install the lower ball joint castle nut by hand.
- Use a 24mm socket to tighten the lower ball joint castle nut to Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to line up the hole.
Step 9: Replace the Upper Ball Joint if Needed
- The upper ball joint on your Tacoma is normally replaced with the complete upper control arm assembly.
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the upper ball joint cotter pin.
- Use a 19mm socket or 19mm wrench to loosen the upper ball joint castle nut a few turns.
- Use a ball joint separator to separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the long upper control arm pivot bolt.
- Remove the upper control arm from the frame pockets.

- At ride height, use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to tighten the upper control arm pivot bolt to Torque to 130 Nm (96 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Outer Tie Rod
- Guide the outer tie rod stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the castle nut by hand.
- Use a 19mm socket to tighten the outer tie rod nut to Torque to 67 Nm (49 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers.
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more. Do not loosen it.
Step 11: Reinstall Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket to reinstall the brake hose bracket bolt.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to reinstall ABS wire bracket bolts if equipped.
- Route the ABS wire and brake hose exactly like your photo.
- Tighten small bracket bolts to Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel
- Install the wheel onto the hub by hand.
- Start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the floor jack to raise your Tacoma slightly, then remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck to the ground.
- Use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Final Safety Check

- Use a 24mm socket to verify the lower ball joint nut is tight.
- Use a 19mm socket to verify tie rod and upper ball joint nuts are tight if removed.
