🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the five wheel nuts about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tire is still supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Position the 3-ton floor jack at the approved front-center lifting point.
- Raise the front and place 3-ton jack stands under the reinforced side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands and confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Record the Existing Tie Rod Position
- Use a wire brush to clean the exposed threads between the outer tie rod end and locking nut.
- Use a paint marker to mark the locking nut and threaded inner tie rod.
- Use a metric tape measure to record the distance from the locking nut to a fixed point on the tie rod end.
- Count every complete turn during removal. This keeps the alignment close enough to reach an alignment shop.
- Photos help preserve the original position.
Step 5: Loosen the Locking Nut
- Apply penetrating oil to the locking nut and exposed threads. Allow several minutes for it to soak.
- Use a 22mm open-end wrench on the locking nut while holding the tie rod end with a 14mm open-end wrench.
- Turn the locking nut only enough to break it loose. Do not move it farther than necessary.
- The locking nut is also called a jam nut; it locks the alignment adjustment in place.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin and Castle Nut
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the tie rod stud.
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the castle nut.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Never straighten and reuse it.
Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End
- Place the outer tie rod end puller around the steering-knuckle arm and tie rod stud.
- Tighten the puller until the tapered stud releases from the knuckle.
- A tapered stud is cone-shaped and locks tightly into the steering knuckle when its nut is tightened.
- Do not strike the stud, threads, brake rotor, or aluminum steering knuckle.
Step 8: Remove the Old Tie Rod End
- Use the 22mm open-end wrench to keep the locking nut near its marked position.
- Turn the outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand and count the exact number of complete turns required to remove it.
- Compare the old and new parts. The stud taper, thread direction, overall length, and boot position must match.
Step 9: Install the New Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand using the same number of turns recorded during removal.
- Align it with the measurement and paint reference recorded earlier.
- Do not force the threads. If the part does not turn easily, remove it and restart it straight.
Step 10: Connect the Tie Rod End to the Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod stud fully into the steering-knuckle arm.
- Install the new castle nut by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use a 17mm socket and 10-150 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten the castle nut to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter-pin holes do not align, tighten the nut only enough to reach the next slot. Never loosen it for alignment.
- Use needle-nose pliers to install and bend the new cotter pin securely around the nut.
Step 11: Tighten the Locking Nut
- Hold the tie rod end with the 14mm open-end wrench so it does not rotate.
- Use the 22mm open-end wrench with the 10-150 ft-lb torque wrench and a suitable wrench adapter to tighten the locking nut to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
- Keep the wrench adapter at 90 degrees to the torque wrench so the torque value remains accurate.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel
- Install the wheel and start all five wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle, remove the 3-ton jack stands, and lower the tire to the ground.
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 10-150 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ With your Accord stationary, switch to READY mode and slowly turn the steering wheel in both directions.
- ✅ Check that steering movement is smooth and the tie rod boot does not twist or contact nearby parts.
- ✅ Confirm that the steering wheel remains reasonably centered during a very short, low-speed test.
- ✅ Stop immediately if the steering pulls sharply, binds, clunks, or the stability-control warning appears.
- ✅ Have a professional four-wheel alignment performed immediately. Counting turns is not a substitute for alignment equipment.
