🔧 Sonata - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill

This service drains part of the old automatic transmission fluid, installs fresh Hyundai-spec fluid, and sets the level at the correct temperature. Your Sonata has no traditional dipstick, so accurate temperature monitoring and a level-plug check are essential.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Assumption: This procedure is for the stock Hyundai six-speed automatic transmission.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Sonata on four jack stands so it remains level; never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Automatic transmission fluid can cause burns when hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Keep the engine running only during the final level check, with the parking brake applied and the wheels securely chocked.
  • ⚠️ Do not use universal ATF, Hyundai SP-III fluid, CVT fluid, or dual-clutch fluid.
  • ⚠️ Do not perform a pressurized transmission flush. A controlled drain and refill is safer for routine service.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Sonata on firm, level ground. Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🌡️ Begin with the transmission cool enough to handle safely. The final fluid level will be checked at 50-60°C (122-140°F).
  • 📱 Connect the OBD-II scan tool and confirm it can display automatic transmission fluid temperature before draining anything. An OBD-II scan tool plugs into the diagnostic connector and reads live vehicle data.
  • 📏 Use the floor jack and four jack stands to raise the vehicle evenly. Check the rocker-panel area with the digital level; the vehicle must be approximately level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
  • 🧴 Shake each sealed fluid bottle and keep all filling equipment clean. Small amounts of dirt can damage transmission valves.
  • 🛑 Loosen the fill plug before removing the drain plug. This prevents draining the transmission and then discovering that it cannot be refilled.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Level the Vehicle

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack at the specified front and rear center lifting points, then place all four jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points.
  • Use the digital level on a flat rocker-panel surface to confirm your Sonata is level.
  • Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before going underneath.
  • Keep removed fasteners grouped by location.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower-cover bolts.
  • Use the trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Lower the cover and place it aside.

Step 3: Loosen the Transmission Fill Plug

  • Locate the fill plug on the transmission case. Do not confuse it with an engine or transmission mounting bolt.
  • Use the 24mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
  • Remove the plug briefly to confirm access, then reinstall it finger-tight while preparing to drain.
  • Never drain until the fill plug opens.

Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid

  • Position the 10-liter drain pan directly beneath the transmission drain plug.
  • Use the 24mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug slowly.
  • Allow the fluid to drain until it falls to an occasional drip, usually 10-15 minutes.
  • Inspect the old fluid for metallic flakes, a strong burned odor, or heavy black contamination. Fine gray paste on a magnetic plug can be normal; visible chips are not.
  • Pour the drained fluid into the graduated measuring container and record the amount.

Step 5: Install the Drain Plug

  • Use shop rags and brake cleaner to clean the drain plug and the surrounding case area.
  • Install a new drain-plug sealing washer. Thread the plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Do not use an impact wrench on the aluminum transmission case.

Step 6: Add Fresh SP-IV Fluid

  • Remove the fill plug with the 24mm socket and ratchet.
  • Use the fluid-transfer pump and flexible hose to add approximately the same quantity of Hyundai SP-IV fluid that was drained.
  • For a normal drain and refill, expect roughly 4-5 liters; do not rely on quantity alone because the final level check determines the correct amount.
  • Install a new fill-plug sealing washer and thread the fill plug in by hand.
  • Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Circulate the New Fluid

  • Confirm the parking brake is applied and all four jack stands are secure.
  • Start the engine with your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
  • Move the selector slowly through P > R > N > D, pausing three seconds in each position.
  • Repeat the sequence twice, then return the selector to Park. Keep the engine idling.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to monitor transmission-fluid temperature.

Step 8: Check the Fluid Level at the Correct Temperature

  • Wait until the scan tool displays 50-60°C (122-140°F) transmission-fluid temperature.
  • With the engine idling and your Sonata level, position the drain pan beneath the transmission level plug.
  • Use the 22mm socket and ratchet to remove the level plug carefully.
  • If fluid exits as a thin stream and slows to a steady drip, the level is correct.
  • If no fluid comes out, reinstall the level plug finger-tight, switch off the engine, remove the fill plug with the 24mm socket, and add SP-IV fluid in 200mL increments using the fluid-transfer pump. Restart the engine, cycle the selector, restore the specified temperature, and check again.
  • If fluid pours out heavily, allow it to drain until only a thin stream or steady drip remains.
  • A steady drip indicates the correct level.

Step 9: Install the Level Plug

  • Install a new sealing washer on the level plug and start the plug by hand.
  • Use the 22mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the level plug to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
  • Switch off the engine.
  • Use shop rags and brake cleaner to remove spilled fluid from the transmission case.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Cover

  • Position the lower engine cover and install its clips using your fingers.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to install the cover bolts snugly. Do not overtighten the small bolts or plastic retainers.
  • Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise each end slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower your Sonata carefully.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Drive gently for 10-15 minutes. Confirm that Reverse and Drive engage normally and shifts remain smooth.
  • 🔍 Park on clean, level ground and inspect the drain, fill, and level plugs for leakage.
  • 🧾 Record the date, odometer reading, fluid specification, and amount installed.
  • ♻️ Take the used transmission fluid to an authorized recycling or hazardous-waste collection facility. Do not pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
  • ⚠️ Stop driving and obtain professional diagnosis if the old fluid contains metal chips, the transmission slips, or delayed engagement continues.
