🔧 Elantra - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill

Assumption: These instructions apply to the factory 6-speed automatic transmission. They do not apply to the available 6-speed manual transmission.

This service drains part of the old automatic transmission fluid, replaces the sealing washers, and sets the fluid level at Hyundai’s specified temperature. A drain-and-fill is safer for beginner maintenance than connecting the transmission to a powered flushing machine.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Elantra on four jack stands placed at the approved lift points. The vehicle must remain level while checking the fluid.
  • ⚠️ Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid and exhaust components can cause serious burns. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Use only Hyundai SP-IV-compatible automatic transmission fluid. Dexron, Mercon, CVT fluid, and gear oil are incorrect.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine unless the transmission has been refilled after draining.
  • ⚠️ Keep the brake pedal applied when shifting through the gear positions.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Hyundai SP-IV-compatible automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 5 US quarts
  • Transmission drain-plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill-plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
  • Transmission level-plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Drive your Elantra for approximately 10 minutes, then park on a solid, level surface.
  • 📋 Apply the parking brake, select Park, shut off the engine, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 📋 Confirm the fluid container specifically states Hyundai SP-IV compatibility.
  • 📋 Connect the OBD-II scan tool before lifting the vehicle. “Transmission fluid temperature” may be displayed as TFT or ATF temperature.
  • 📋 No infotainment menu, battery registration, or transmission coding is required.
  • 📋 Do not proceed if your Elantra has a clutch pedal. The manual transmission uses a different fluid and procedure.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Level the Vehicle

  • Place the wheel chocks against the rear tires.
  • Use the hydraulic floor jack at the approved front lifting point, then place two jack stands beneath the front side lift points.
  • Raise the rear and place the remaining two jack stands beneath the rear side lift points.
  • Verify with a visual check that your Elantra sits level from front to rear and side to side.
  • Gently push the body to confirm all four stands are stable before going underneath.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and trim-clip removal tool as required to remove the fasteners holding the lower engine splash shield.
  • Place the fasteners in a clean container so none are lost.
  • Photograph fastener locations before removal.

Step 3: Locate and Loosen the Fill Plug First

  • Identify the automatic transmission case on the driver side of the engine compartment.
  • Locate the upper transmission fill plug. It is separate from the lower drain plug and side level plug.
  • Use a 24mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the fill plug before draining anything.
  • Do not drain the transmission if the fill plug cannot be removed.
  • Remove the fill plug and its sealing washer, then keep dirt away from the opening.

Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid

  • Place the 8-quart drain pan beneath the transmission drain plug at the bottom of the case.
  • Use a 24mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the drain plug carefully.
  • Allow the fluid to drain until it slows to an occasional drip, normally 10-15 minutes.
  • Transfer the drained fluid into the graduated measuring container and record the quantity.
  • Inspect the fluid for metal fragments or a strong burnt smell. Fine gray paste on a magnetic plug can be normal; chips or flakes require professional diagnosis.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Clean the drain plug and sealing surface with shop towels.
  • Install a new drain-plug sealing washer.
  • Thread the plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the torque wrench and 24mm socket to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Add New SP-IV Fluid

  • Use the fluid-transfer pump with 3/8-inch hose or the long-neck funnel to add Hyundai SP-IV-compatible fluid through the fill opening.
  • Initially add the same quantity that was measured during draining. A typical drain-and-fill is approximately 3.5-4.0 US quarts, but use the level procedure rather than quantity alone.
  • Install the fill plug with a new sealing washer and tighten it lightly with the 24mm socket. Final-torque it after the level is correct.

Step 7: Circulate and Warm the Fluid

  • Confirm the drain and fill plugs are installed, then start the engine while your Elantra remains level on four jack stands.
  • Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
  • Move the selector slowly through Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and each manual gear position. Pause for approximately three seconds in each position.
  • Return the selector to Park and leave the engine idling.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to monitor transmission-fluid temperature until it reaches 50-60°C (122-140°F).
  • If scan data is unavailable, use the digital infrared thermometer on the transmission sump as a less-accurate backup. Do not use your hand to judge temperature.

Step 8: Set the Fluid Level

  • Keep the engine idling, the selector in Park, and your Elantra level.
  • Place the drain pan beneath the transmission level plug on the side or lower portion of the transmission case.
  • Use the 22mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the level plug carefully. Hot fluid may escape immediately.
  • If a thin, steady stream becomes a slow drip, the level is correct.
  • If no fluid comes out, reinstall the level plug loosely, shut off the engine, and use the fluid-transfer pump to add SP-IV fluid through the fill opening in 0.2-quart increments. Restart the engine, cycle the gears, restore the specified temperature, and check again.
  • If fluid pours out heavily, let it drain until it becomes a thin stream or slow drip.
  • Install a new level-plug sealing washer and tighten the plug with the torque wrench and 22mm socket to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Correct temperature is essential for accurate leveling.

Step 9: Tighten the Fill Plug

  • Shut off the engine.
  • Use shop towels to clean fluid from the transmission case.
  • Use the torque wrench and 24mm socket to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Position the lower splash shield against the original mounting points.
  • Use the trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall reusable clips without forcing them.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall the original bolts snugly. Do not overtighten plastic-mounted fasteners.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise each end slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Elantra slowly onto the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks only after the vehicle is fully supported by its tires.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and hold the brake while shifting through every gear. Engagement should be smooth and consistent.
  • ✅ Take a gentle 10-15 minute test drive. Avoid hard acceleration during the initial check.
  • ✅ Park on level ground and inspect the drain, level, and fill plugs for leakage.
  • ✅ Recheck underneath your Elantra after the next drive.
  • ✅ Do not add transmission additives or mix SP-IV with another specification.
  • ✅ Dispose of the used fluid through an authorized oil-recycling or hazardous-waste facility. Do not pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
  • ✅ No adaptation reset, coding, or battery registration is normally required after a basic drain-and-fill.
