🔧 Sentra - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
Changing the oil removes contaminants and replenishes the additives that protect your Sentra’s 1.8L engine. Replace the oil filter and drain-plug sealing washer at the same time.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level, solid ground and never crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- 🧤 Allow a hot engine to cool. Warm oil should flow easily but must not be hot enough to burn you.
- 🚗 Support your Sentra at the specified front lifting points with jack stands or use properly rated ramps.
- 🛑 Keep the manual transmission in 1st gear and apply the parking brake firmly.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
- ♻️ Collect all used oil and take it to an approved recycling facility.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 14mm six-point socket
- 3/8-inch-drive ratchet

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting API SP or API SN - Qty: 5 US quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain-plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
Your Sentra takes approximately 4.2 US quarts (4.0 liters) with a filter change. Final level must be set using the dipstick rather than by adding the entire container.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park on level pavement, apply the parking brake, select 1st gear, and switch off the engine.
- 🛞 Place the wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- 🌡️ If the engine is cold, run it for three to five minutes and then switch it off. Wait several minutes before draining.
- 📖 A jack stand is a locking support placed beneath the vehicle after it has been raised; the floor jack must not be used as the only support.
- 🧰 Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap and yellow-handled engine-oil dipstick.
- 🔐 Battery disconnection and scan-tool preparation are not required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front-center lifting point to raise your Sentra.
- Position the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum beneath the reinforced front side lifting points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
- Gently push the vehicle to verify that it is stable before going underneath.
- Leave the floor jack nearby as backup support.
Step 2: Open the Oil-Fill Passage
- Use your hand to unscrew the oil filler cap counterclockwise.
- Use your hand to pull the dipstick out slightly. This lets air enter while the old oil drains.
- Use shop towels to clean dirt away from the filler opening so it cannot enter the engine.
Step 3: Access the Drain Plug and Filter
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- If an under-engine access panel blocks either component, use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove its bolts.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the center pins before removing any plastic retainers. Do not force them.
- Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the metal oil pan and the spin-on oil filter beside the lower engine area.
Step 4: Drain the Old Engine Oil
- Place the 8-quart oil drain pan beneath and slightly behind the drain plug because the oil initially exits in an arc.
- Use the 14mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the plug carefully by hand, keeping it pressed against the pan until the final thread releases.
- Allow the oil to drain until it slows to an occasional drip, usually 10 minutes.
- Use shop towels to clean the drain plug and the sealing surface around the oil-pan opening.
Step 5: Install the Drain Plug
- Remove the old sealing washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain-plug sealing washer.
- Thread the drain plug clockwise by hand until seated. If it does not turn easily, remove and restart it to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 14mm socket with the 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to torque the drain plug to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Never add extra force after the torque wrench clicks.
Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter
- Reposition the 8-quart oil drain pan beneath the filter.
- Use the 65mm 14-flute oil-filter cap wrench, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to turn the filter counterclockwise.
- Unscrew the filter by hand while keeping it upright. Oil will spill as its seal releases.
- Check that the old rubber filter gasket came off with the filter. A gasket stuck to the engine would cause a serious leak.
- Use shop towels to wipe the engine’s filter mounting surface clean.
Step 7: Install the New Oil Filter
- Apply a thin film of fresh 0W-20 engine oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved fingertip.
- Thread the filter clockwise by hand until the gasket first contacts the mounting surface.
- Continue tightening the filter by hand approximately two-thirds of one turn after gasket contact.
- If access prevents firm hand tightening, use the 65mm 14-flute oil-filter cap wrench and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to torque the filter to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the filter.
Step 8: Reinstall the Access Panel
- If removed, position the access panel and install its retainers using the small flat-blade screwdriver.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to snug the panel bolts. Do not overtighten the small fasteners.
- Move the drain pan and all tools out from under your Sentra.
Step 9: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift your Sentra slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum, then lower the vehicle slowly onto level ground.
- Keep the wheel chocks in place until the repair is complete.
Step 10: Add New Engine Oil
- Place the engine-oil funnel in the filler opening.
- Pour in approximately 3.8 US quarts (3.6 liters) of 0W-20 oil, then wait two minutes.
- Use shop towels to wipe the dipstick clean. Insert it fully, remove it again, and read both sides.
- Add oil in small amounts until the level is close to the upper mark. Do not exceed it.
- Remove the engine-oil funnel and install the filler cap clockwise by hand until secure.
Step 11: Circulate the Oil and Check the Final Level
- Start the engine and confirm that the red oil-pressure warning light goes out within a few seconds.
- Switch the engine off immediately if the warning light remains illuminated.
- Let the engine idle for about 30 seconds, switch it off, and wait at least five minutes on level ground.
- Use shop towels to wipe and recheck the dipstick. Add small amounts of oil as needed, without exceeding the upper mark.
- The final amount will normally be approximately 4.2 US quarts (4.0 liters).
Step 12: Reset the Oil Maintenance Reminder
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the instrument-cluster control buttons to select Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter > Reset.
- Select and confirm Yes, then switch the ignition off.
- If your basic cluster does not display this menu, record the mileage manually; no scan tool is required.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Look underneath your Sentra while it idles and verify that the drain plug and oil filter remain dry.
- 🛢️ Recheck the dipstick after the first drive and again the following day on level ground.
- ⚠️ Stop the engine immediately if the oil-pressure warning light comes on, oil leaks appear, or abnormal engine noise develops.
- ♻️ Pour the used oil into a sealed container and recycle it with the old filter through an authorized collection facility.
- 📝 Record the date, mileage, oil viscosity, and filter replacement in the maintenance history.
